Marinken Van de Velde (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Sint-Niklaas, Belgium

Words create worlds. And through music, these worlds gain different colors and substance. “Summuning worlds for others” is why the Belgian mezzo-soprano Marinken Van de Velde sings. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in classical solo singing from the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg (2015-2019). She is currently completing her Master of Music degree in vocal studies (2019-2021) with Margriet van Reisen and Sinan Vural. During her studies she performed the roles of mother and witch in the conservatory's version of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel and in several choruses of the Opera Forward Festival. As a part of the collective Ichos - kwartet, she participated in the multimedia project Actias Luna by Dutch composer Aura Bauw, with a piece specifically composed for them. Before she turned to singing, she obtained a bachelor degree as a music teacher. She followed master-classes, focussing on German art songs (her big love and the main focus during her master studies ), with Elly Ameling, Maarten Koningsberger and Susanne Schimmack among others.

Ensemble singing is Marinken Van de Velde's second passion. With the Belgian ensemble Modern Barock Ensemble (2015-2020), she performed the lead role in Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas and participated multiple times in the musical enrichment of baroque dance recitals. As an oratorio soloist, she already performed with different choirs in several oratoria: Bach (Magnificat), Vivaldi (Magnificat and Gloria), Saint-Saens (Oratorio de Noël) among others.

When music isn't on her mind, Marinken Van de Velde spends her free time writing poetry and reading historical novels.
