Peter Wimberger (Bass-Baritone)

The Austrian bass-baritone, Peter Wimberger, studied at the Musikakademie of Vienna, where he was a pupil of Paul Schöffler and Adolf Vogel.

Peter Wimberger made his stage debut in 1963 at the Opera House of Dortmund as Pietro in Simon Boccanegra by Verdi. He appeared in Karlsruhe, Kassel, at the Deutschen Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf-Duisburg, at the Opera House of Frankfurt a.M., at the Munich State Opera and was since 1968 member of the Vienna State Opera. He also appeared at the Landestheater of Linz/Donau. Appearances at the National Opera Warsaw, at the Royal Opera Copenhagen, in Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Basel, Barcelona (1985 as Wanderer in Siegfried), at the Festivals of Bregenz and Florenz. In 1987 he appeared at the Opera House of Köln, in 1988 at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples as Amfortas in Parsifal. In 1990 he sang Pogner in Meistersingern at the Vienna State Opera. In 1992 at the Opéra de Wallonie Lüttich Wotan in Walküre, in 1995 at the Wiener Volksoper the Inquisitor in Feurigen Engel by Prokofiev and at the Vienna State Opera Jochanaan in Salome by R. Strauss.

On the stage Peter Wimberger performed primarily dramatic baritone and bass roles in operas of L.v. Beethoven, W.A. Mozart, Mussorgsky, Richard Wagner, Verdi, Rossini and R. Strauss. He had no less successful career as concert and oratorio bass singer. He sang 57 roles in 44 operas over 900 nights until his retirement in 2002.
