Valerio Zanolli (Bass-Baritone)

Born: January 30, ____ - Torino, Piedmont, Italy

The Iatalian bass-baritone, conductor, artistic director and indipendent researcher, Valerio Zanolli, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Performance Alte Musik (Gesang Renaissance -Romantik) from University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW (2012-2015). He perfecting his singing studies with Rosa Domínguez at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (2012-2018) and took part in master-classes held by Margreet Honig, Paul Triepels, Emma Kirkby and Andreas Scholl; he also obtained a Master of Advance Studies in Vocal Ensemble [AVES] under Anthony Rooley and Evelyn Tubb (2015-2017).

Valerio Zanolli masters a wide repertoire from the late Middle ages to Contemporary music, with a focus on Renaissance, Baroque, “Belcanto” and vocal chamber music. His artistic activity brought him to perform in prestigious halls such as Bozar Brussels, Theater an der Wien, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Amuz Antwerpen, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris, Opéra Royal de Versailles (June 2014) and in the frame of renowned festivals such as Oude Muziek Utrecht, MITO Settembre Musica, Musica Sacra Maastricht, George Enescu International Festival Bucharest, Händel-Festpiele Halle (June 2014), Abendmusiken in der Predigerkirche Basel, Incanti (Torino), and Unione Musicale (Torino); under the baton of, among others, Massimo Raccanelli, Robert King, Ottavio Dantone, Kay Johannsen, Fabio Bonizzoni, Jos van Veldhoven, Filippo Maria Bressan, and Jörg-Andreas Bötticher; and to collaborate with ensembles such as Cappella Murensis - Les Cornets Noirs, InVocare (since April 2018), Basler Madrigalisten (since February 2022; Director: Raphael Immoos), Elyma (Director: Gabriel Garrido), Les Argonautes (since April 2022; Director: Jonas Descotte) and La Cetra Barockorchester Basel (since 2019, Director: Andrea Marcon), Kammerorchester Basel, and Origen (Director: Clau Scherrer). He is a regular guest of the Accademia del Santo Spirito in Turin (since September 2013) and Ad Mosam Barok in the Netherlands (since October 2013; Directors: Huub Ehlen & Bernard Voltèche). His main accompanist is Sharon Prushansky at historical and modern piano(s).

Valerio Zanolli has taken part in recordings for Audite, Glossa, Klara, RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, SRF 2 Kultur and WDR. He sang at the Bayerische Staatsoper In Thomas / Lamento D'arianna by Haas-Monteverdi, conducted by Alexandre Bloch and directed by Anna-Sophie Mahler (April-May 2022), in Einstein On The Beach by Glass, conducted by André de Ridder and directed by Susanne Kennedy at the Theater Basel (February-June 2022) and the Wiener Festwochen (June 2022), and his repertoire includes several roles in operas composed between the Baroque and early 19th century. With Abélia Nordmann, he founded and directs the Novantik Project Basel and is currently vocal coach and Associate Director of Ensemble Choeur3 - Kammerchor Im Dreiland (since January 2023). He currently lives in Basel, Switzerland.

Aside his artistic career as singer, Valerio Zanolli is active in research about different topic linked with music performance. His Master and Master of Advanced Studies thesis (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis FHNW, Basel) are about the music of Pietro Veccoli for the tragicomedy Adelonda di Frigia by Federico della Valle; he is currently working on a complete edition of these "musiche" in the context of their first performance (Torino, 1595).
