Johann Benedict [Benedikt] Carpzow [Carpzov] IV was a German theologian and philologist. He was a member of the well-known Saxon Carpzov family of scholars. He was born the son of the Pastor, Saturday Preacher at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig and Associate University Professor Johann Benedict Carpzow [Carpzov] III (1670-1733), who was in turn a son of the famous theologian Johann Benedict Carpzov II. He enrolled at the humanistic Thomasschule in Leipzig in 1732; and studied there under the Rectors Johann Matthias Gesner and Johann August Ernesti from 1732 to 1735. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. Then he studied theology and philology at Universität Leipzig, where he obtained his Baccalaureus degree in 1738, and his Magister degree in 1740. After his studies, he bcame in 1747 an extraordinary Professor in Leipzig. In 1748 he received a call as a full Professor of ancient Greek at Universität Helmstedt, where he was also appointed Theology Professor in 1749. In 1759 he became Abbot in Königslutter am Elm.
Johann Benedict Carpzow is considered one of the last representatives of Lutheran orthodoxy, whose teaching he wrote on behalf of his sovereign, Duke Karl I. Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, in the form of a Liber doctrinalis theologiae purioris (1768). From his uncle Johann Gottlob Carpzov he received the family manuscript Minuskel 78, which is family-owned.
On September 21, 1756, Johann Benedict Carpzow married the daughter of his Helmstedt colleague Johann Konrad Sigismund Topp, Hedwig Christine Charlotte Topp. The marriage had two daughters and one son: Charlotte Justine (b 1757), Wilhelmine Benedicta (1760–1835) and Johann Benedict (b 1764). Wilhelmina Benedicta Carpzov married a student of her father, the theologian Heinrich Philipp Konrad Henke. |
