Edvard Grieg Kor (Vocal Ensemble)

Founded: 2003 - Bergen, Hordaland, Norway

The Norwegian vocal ensemble Edvard Grieg Kor (= EGK) is the resident a cappella ensemble at Troldhaugen, the home of Edvard Grieg. Displaying versatility across all musical genres, they perform regularly with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and also form the core of the Chorus for Bergen National Opera.

Edvard Grieg Vocal Ensemble consists of eight singers and forms the core of Edvard Grieg Kor. They are rapidly gaining a reputation as a leading 8-part a cappella ensemble, with performances throughout Norway and abroad. They have had numerous works and arrangements written specially for them by leading composers including Jonathan Rathbone and David Lang.

In addition to their busy performing schedule, Edvard Grieg Kor is dedicated to encouraging a cappella singing to the highest level across all age groups through their education programme schools and kindergardens, and also through their innovative Møt Koret scheme for amateur choirs and ensembles.

The eight singers also mentor Edvard Grieg Ungdomskor (EGU), which they formed in 2013. EGU is for singers aged 16-26 and specialises in classical a Cappella singing and they have also performed regularly with Bergen National Opera, and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and have even performed with The Rolling Stones!

Future plans include their annual Christmas concert at Bergen Cathedral, which also features EGU and the five children’s choirs associated with the group.

Highlights in 2018 include a joint concert with the world renowned a cappella ensemble Voces8 at Grieghallen. In June Edvard Grieg Kor recorded their first solo album on the Chandos label, which was released in 2019. November 2021 it was announced that Edward Gardner will be the Chief Conductor for the next three seasons. Edward Gardner will lead at least 2 concert productions each season in the period 2021-2024, where the repertoire and program will be prepared by Edward Gardner in collaboration with EGK’s artistic team. Some of the concerts will be included in Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra's concert season programming.
