Giorgio Musolesi (Conductor)

Born: 1998 - Bologna, Italy

The Italian conductor and composer, Giorgio Musolesi, received his first musical education in piano and composition in early childhood. As a teenager he studied at the Conservatorio di Musica Giovan Battista Martini, where he obtained his diploma in composition with the distinction cum laude (2017-2019). Since autumn 2019 he has been studying at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, where he completed his studies in orchestral conducting in Ion Marin's class in October 2022. In addition, he has studied choral conducting with Jörn Andresen and composition with Johannes Maria Staud in Salzburg. He has taken part in numerous master-classes with conductors such as Vladimir Fedoseyev, Alan Gilbert, Alondra de la Parra and Bruno Weil.

Since his debut at the Philharmonie de Paris in spring 2023, Giorgio Musolesi has been one of the up-and-coming composers and conductors of his generation. As a conductor, he is particularly committed to the field of music theater and contemporary music. In January 2021 he was chosen to conduct W.A. Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito as part of the "Mozartforum 2021" at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. In November of the same year he conducted the world premiere of the opera Im Geheimnis by J.B. Marchand. Since 2021 he has been in intensive cooperation with the Wiener Philharmoniker, for whose opera camps he works as choir director and assistant conductor. As part of this, he performed the pieces W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Jedermanns Kinder, W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and and Orfeo ed Euridice at the Salzburg Festival from 2021 to 2023.

The choirs and orchestras Giorgio Musolesi has conducted in his career so far include the Sächsische Staatsopernchor Dresden Chor der Semperoper Dresden, Chor des Staatstheaters am Gärtnerplatz (Munich), Chor des Stadttheaters Klagenfurt, Ensemble Multilatérale, Vocal Ensemble Les Métaboles (Paris), Ensemble Multilatérale, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Philharmonie Bad Reichenhall, the ensembles oenm, NAMES, Cantando Admont. Since 2018 he has been conductor and artistic director of the vocal ensemble Flos Musicae (Bologna), which specializes in historical performance practice. He worked as as choirmaster for H. Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (Salzburg/Siena, summer 2023) and as musical assistant for the new music theater piece Ping Pong (M. Tangian, Salzburg Festival 2023). In 2024 he became musical assistant to the World Youth Choir.

As a composer, Giorgio Musolesi has participated in master-classes with renowned composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Mark Andre, Pierluigi Billone, Yann Robin, Sarah Nemtsov, Márton Illés, Eva Reiter and Henry Fourés. His works have already been performed at international festivals such as the Australian Percussion Gathering (Brisbane 2016), ARCO (Marseille 2021), Crossroades (Salzburg 2021, 2022), AspekteFestival Salzburg (2022) and DYNAMIKfest (2023); and played by a wide variety of ensembles, including œnm (oesterreichisches ensemble für neue musik; 2020, 2022, 2023), NAMES (2021, 2023), PHACE, Cantando Admont (2022), Ensemble KNM Berlin, Ensemble Multilatérale (2021), Duo Beryll and Tana Quartet.

In 2022 Giorgio Musolesi was a finalist in the Talentbörse ö1-Komposition. In 2023 he was commissioned by the Landestheater Linz to re-orchestrate Jacques Offenbach's operetta Unterwegs and was engaged as choirmaster for the new production of Purcell/Fourès' Dido and Aeneas/Elissa at the Mozarteum in co-operation with the Accademia Chigiana di Siena. In addition, in 2023 he realized the music for the music theater piece Ping Pong (Tangian/Haller) at the Salzburg Festival.
