David Erler (Counter-tenor)

Born: 1981 - Auerbach/Vogtland, Germany

The German counter-tenor, David Erler, studied voice at the Leipzig conservatory „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“, first with Maria Jonas, then decisively with Marek Rzepka. As a scholarship recipient of the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung Munich, he graduated with a diploma, followed by studies in theory of music. Further artistic impetus was gained through master-classes with Andreas Scholl, Marius van Altena and The King's Singers.

David Erler has established himself as a sought-after soloist and specialist for Baroque music all over Germany and Europe. He is working and performing regularly with conductors such as Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller, Manfred Cordes, Laurence Cummings, Klaus Eichhorn, Michi Gaigg, Peter Van Heyghen, Jos van Immerseel, Matthias Jung, Wolfgang Katschner, Rudolf Lutz, Hermann Max, Gregor Meyer, Peter Neumann, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Ludger Rémy(†), Gotthold Schwarz, Jos van Veldhoven, Adam Viktora and Roland Wilson, as well as with ensembles such as Barockorchester L'arpa festante, Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, Bell'arte Salzburg (Director: Annegret Siedel), Capella Fidicinia, Capella de la Torre, Cappella Sagittariana (Director: Norbert Schuster), Collegium Marianum Prag, Il Gardellino (Director: Marcel Ponseele), Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam (Director: Harry van der Kamp), Ensemble Inégal, Lautten Compagney Berlin (Director: Wolfgang Katschner), Les Muffatti Brüssel (Director: Peter Van Heyghen), Musica Fiata, Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Director: Jos van Veldhoven), Sette Voci (Director: Peter Kooy), and Weser-Renaissance Bremen. Due to his stylistic assurance and his wide experience in ensemble singing, he gets regular invitations as a guest vocalist from vocal ensembles such as Ensemble Amarcord, Calmus Ensemble Leipzig, Singer Pur, Singphoniker, Stimmwerck, Vox Luminis (Director: Lionel Meunier) and Dresdner Kammerchor (Director: Hans-Christoph Rademann).

Besides an extensive devotion to Renaissance polyphonic music and regular projects dedicated to Italian and preferably English solo repertoire from the 17th and 18th century, David Erler pays special artistic attention to German music from the Baroque area. He receives engagements from prestigious festivals in Ansbach, Musica Antiqua Brügge, Dresdner Musikfestspiele, Erzgebirge, Händelfestspiele Halle, Bachfest Leipzig, Göttingen, Trigonale Klagenfurt and Kulturwald, MDR Musiksommer, Passau, Rheingau, Schleswig-Holstein-Musikfestival, Stuttgart, Gustav Mahler Musikwochen Toblach, Resonanzen Wien, etc. His broad repertoire includes also Lieder and opera roles, and contemporary works (including world premieres of music by Moritz Eggert and Masato Suzuki), whilst the music of the German Baroque remains his special passion.

David Erler appears on more than 70 CD releases by now, among which his contribution to the complete recording of Heinrich Schütz' oeuvre under the artistic direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann (label: Carus) deserves special emphasize, as well as the first complete recording of Johann Kuhnau's vocal works, partially initiated by himself and under the artistic direction of Gregor Meyer (label: cpo). He has also apearedc in numerous radio productions in Germany and abroad.

In collaboration with the ensemble “The Sound and the Fury” (Director: led by Thomas E. Bauer; other members include John Potter, Richard Wistreich or Colin Mason) for a number of ORF broadcasts, he has been involved in an extensive and much praised recording series called “paradise regained”, which includes works of Gombert, Obrecht, Ockeghem, de la Rue, Caron, Faugues and others.

Besides his main occupation in a solo capacity, David Erler is increasingly focused on working as an editor and lector. He is chief editor of Johann Kuhnau's complete vocal works, which are being published by Breitkopf & Härtel within the next years, mainly as first editions. Moreover, a new edition of Jan Dismas Zelenka's Requiem (ZWV 46) has been published recently for the same publishing company, further releases being planned already.
