The Hong Kong Chinese choral conductor, percussionist, music educator and critic of music and culture, Leon Chu (Chinese: 朱振威), graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CHUK), majoring in Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies (2000-2003). After vocal studies with Albert Lim and percussion with Choy Lap-tak, he has also studied conducting under Norwegian conductor Kane Harken, Theodora Pavlovitch of Bulgaria, Gábor Hollerung of Hungary and Pedro Montalto of Portugal. In 2014, he attained the Master degree in Choral Conducting from the Untversity of Saint Joseph, Macau (2011-2014).
Aftrer graduation from the CUHK, Leon Chu he has been appointed conductor of several choirs and ensembles. Since 2006, he has been leading The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus and bringing the chorus to stages across Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Malaysia. The chorus is now one of the best local unwersity choruses made up primarily with devoted undergraduates. Under his leadership, the chorus catches attention of international press with a series of live concert footage. He was also Conductor (Senior Class) of Hong Kong Children's Choir (January 2009-December 2012); and conducted the The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chamber Choir, Hong Kong Melody Makers, Hong Kong Tertiary Students' Ensemble, etc. He has been vocal coach RC Choir since November 2010.
Leon Chu is an active critic, having his writings published for all major Chinese newspapers including Mingpao Daily, Hong Kong Economic Journal and Hong Kong Economic Time and his regular contributions to Hi-Fi Review, art plus, Fine Music and MUZIK of Taiwan. He was the guest speaker of a series on music appreciation on Commercial Radio 1 in 2008. He was also Assitant Editor of men's uno (Hong Kong Edition) (July 2005-December 2006); Music Manager Officer of Naxos Digital Services Ltd. (December 2006-November 2007); rEditor of Fine Music (December 2007-August 2008). He currently lives in Tai Po, Hong Kong. |
