Jonathan Zachary Harris (Bass-Baritone)

Born: August 1980 - New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

The American bass-baritone, Jonathan Zachary Harris, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from Brown University (2003-2007); his Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan (2012-2014); and his DMA degree in Voice Performance from University of Michigan (2014-2017). He is a two-time Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Gulf Coast Region 2013-2014; Great Lakes Region 2014-2015). He was Resident Artist (two seasons) at Dicapo Opera (2010-2012); and Participant Chautauqua Music Festival Voice Program (2011). He has also been an Apprentice Artist with Sarasota Opera (January-March 2018), Des Moines Metro Opera (May-July 2015; May-July 2016), Opera Saratoga (May-June 2014), and Chautauqua Opera (June-August 2013).

Jonathan Harris is and opera singer, recitalist, and actor. His operatic interpretations have been hailed as “superb” (The Chautauquan Daily) and “sensational” (Voce di Meche), and of a return engagement with the Opera Company of Middlebury, the Rutland Herald declared that Jonathan “nearly stole the show with his hilarious and beautifully sung Papageno.” He has sung with Opera Company of Middlebury (October 2016), Opera MODO, PORTopera (now Opera Maine), Bronx Opera, Dicapo Opera, and dell’Arte Opera Ensemble. Role highlights include Leporello in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni (dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, 2018), Don Alfonso in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte (University of Michigan, 2016), Papageno in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute (Opera Company of Middlebury, 2016), Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia (University of Michigan, 2013), Peter Quince in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Superintendent Budd in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring (Opera MODO, 2016), Simone and Betto in Gianni Schicchi, (PORTopera, 2014; Dicapo Opera for Kids, 2011) and George Benton in Dead Man Walking (University of Michigan, 2014).

As a recitalist, Jonathan Harris is a 2017 alumnus of SongFest in Los Angeles. His recent solo programs include "Green Springs the Tree", a collection of mid-20th century art songs and folk arrangements from both sides of the iron curtain and Liederkreis, an exploration of the song cycles of Robert Schumann, Francis Poulenc, and Rorem. He is currently based in New York City.
