Martina Janková (Soprano)

Born: Czech Republic

The Czech-born soprano, Martina Janková, began her musical training in Ostrava, studied in Basle and is currently with Professor Antonie Denygrova from Prague.

Martina Janková has been successful in a number of important contests including the International contest "Neue Stimmen" in Gütersloh. She attended masterclasses with Carlo Bergonzi, Gustav Kuhn and Michael Eliassen and became a member of the International Opera Studio in Zürich, where she performed Rosina in W.A. Mozart’s La finta semplice, in Oberon under John Eliot Gardiner, Karolka in Janacek’s Jenufa under Franz Welser-Möst and Gianetta/Elisir d’Amore under Nello Santi.

Martina Janková appeared as Despina at the Prague National Opera, under Gustav Kuhn as Sofia in Rossini’s Il Signor Bruschino in Sofia and Prague and as Zerlina/Don Giovanni under the direction of Katherina Thalbach in Berlin.

As a concert singer, Martina Janková has appeared in Poland, in Austria (Innsbruck), in Switzerland (Internationales Bachfest Schaffhausen and Zürich Tonhalle), in Germany, Italy and in Japan. She gave Lied recitals at the Janacek Spring Festival, the Chopin Festival in Marienbad, the Martinu Festival and concerts the Festival de Saintes, the Rheingau Festival under Hugh Wolff and concerts under Philippe Herreweghe in Gap and Chambery.

In the 1998/99 season Martina Janková became a member of the Zurich Opera, where she performed her first Celia under Nikolaus Harnoncourt in W.A. Mozart’s Lucio Silla, Despina, Sandmännchen in Hänsel und Gretel, Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos and the young Shepherd in Wagner’s Tannhäuser under Franz Welser-Möst.

Future engagements include: Erste Dame in a new production of W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Gretel, Xenia in Boris Godunov under Franz Welser-Möst as well as Amor in Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice under William Christie in Zürich, Prima Ancella in Cherubini’s Medea under Sir Charles Mackerras at the Salzburg Festival, Lied recital at the Rheingau Festival 2000, Elijah under Wolfgang Sawallisch with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Echo/Ariadne auf Naxos under Christoph von Dohnányi and Karolka in Janacek’s Jenufa under John Eliot Gardiner at the Salzburg Festival 2001, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 8 under Franz Welser-Möst at the Salzburg Festival, in Prague and Linz.
