Ingela Onstad (Soprano)

Born: 1980 - Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

The American soprano, Ingela Onstad, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from McGill University (September 1998-May 2002); and her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of New Mexico (2012-2014). In addition, she obtained Master of Arts degree in Mental Health Counseling/Counselor from the University of New Mexico (2014-2017).

Ingela Onstad has been professional Classigal singer since September 2006, operating in Canada, Germany and the USA. She enjoyed a varied international career in opera, concert work, and contemporary music. Operatic highlights include performances at Dresden’s Staatsoperette, Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein, and Santa Fe Opera in roles including Musetta in La Boheme, Pamina and Papagena in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Nannetta in Falstaff, Mabel in Pirates of Penzance, and Violetta in La Traviata. She also sang the roles of Merab and Michal in the Faust Prize nominated staged production of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio Saul in Oldenburg, Germany.

Highlights of her career as an oratorio soloist include Carmina Burana, Charpentier’s Te Deum, Haydn’s The Creation, and numerous J.S. Bach Cantatas. She has sung recitals at Klavierfestival Lindlar in Lindlar Germany, as well as across the USA.

A sought-after interpreter of contemporary works, she has created operatic roles in 2 world premieres (Strauss' Los Bufones and Kampe's ANOIA) sung roles in operatic works by Bibalo (Fräulein Julie) and Ullman (Der Kaiser von Atlantis). She has also performed diverse works by Arnold Schoenberg, György Kurtág, and Schwantner, amongst others.

Ingela Onstad debuted with the Santa Fe Symphony in Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 as a last-minute replacement for an indisposed colleague. Recent performances include a recorded program of J.S. Bach for the Arizona Bach Festival, the New Mexico premiere of Kafka Fragments by G. Kurtág, and her debut with Opera Southwest as the main role in Salvatore Sciarrino's opera Lohengrin. Upcoming performances include L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with both the El Paso Symphony Orchestra as well as the Roswell Symphony Orchestra, and Johannes Brahms Requiem with the Mid-Columbia Symphony.

In addition to her work as a singer, Ingela Onstad is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) who frequently presents on topics concerning mental health and performers. She worked as Licensed Mental Health Counselor at Age To Age Counseling in Albuquerque, New Mexico (August 2016-January 2020). With her business Courageous Artistry (founded in January 2020) she provides specialized performance coaching services to the performing arts community worldwide. She currently lives in in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
