Sächsischer Kammerchor (Chamber Choir)

Founded: Leipzig, Saxony, Germany

The Sächsischer Kammerchor (= SKC; Saxon Chamber Choir) is a concert choir (member of the Verband deutscher Konzertchöre = Association of German Concert Choirs), who sees its main task in the living care of sacred music. Highlights of their work include appearances for the Bachfest Leipzig, MDR-Musiksommer, Schumanniade and Mendelssohnfesttage. Patron of the Sächsischer Kammerchor is Kammersänger Professor Peter Schreier. The artistic direction is in the hands of the conductor Fabian Enders. The Sächsischer Kammerchor performs under guest conductors such as Peter Schreier, Georg Christoph Biller and Wolfgang Kupke. The choir performs its concerts with orchestras such as the Mitteldeutsches Kammerorchester, Staatskapelle Halle, Kammerphilharmonie Odessa, Kammerakademie Halle, Leipziger Barockorchester, Mitteldeutsche Virtuosen, Erzgebirgische Philharmonie, etc.

The great sacred works of the 18th to the 20th century, in addition to the extensive a cappella repertoire, characterize the work of the ensemble, which deserves the discovery of forgotten music and the performance of newly created music. The work of J.S. Bach is at the center of the activity: The cantatas and passions are reproduced in surprising interpretations with regard to their dramatic component and their unique word-sound relationship by Fabian Enders, deliberately incorporating aspects of various performance-practical currents and evaluating them in a novel way. The Sächsischer Kammerchor, for example, is organizing the concert series "Vergessene Feste" together with the Philharmonischen Collegium of the Bachakademie Leipzig. Here, cantatas are heard for liturgical and secular occasions that are little noticed. In addition, a big oratorio is performed each year. For example, in 2016 Fabian Enders interpreted Felix Mendelssohn's Elias at the Leipzig Thomaskirche; in 2017 J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244).

Conductor Fabian Enders shapes the profile of the choir. The aim of his work is a new synthesis of language and music, of historical information and living expressiveness. The members of the Sächsischer Kammerchor are graduates of the Thomanerchor Leipzig as well as students of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig. Kammersänger Professor Peter Schreier holds the patronage of the Sächsischer Kammerchor.

"Full and in one piece" the sound, the "clear articulation", the singing of "exciting agility"; "Music abounds with power," "combined into a festive whole," "at a high level as a sharply contrasted soul painting." With such words Leipziger Volkszeitung and the Freie Presse repeatedly review concerts by the Sächsischer Kammerchor.

The first CD productions were published by the labels Rondeau (2015, 2018, 2019) and Querstand (2016).
