Collegium Vocale Seoul (Chamber Choir)

Founded: 2007 - Seoul, South Korea

Collegium Vocale Seoul (= CVS) (Conductor: Sun-Ah Kim), founded in 2007, is one of the representative choirs in Korea consisting of members who are professional conductors, singers and voice/choral conducting major students. This ensemble is acclaimed for their “breath-taking and aesthetic performances of the sacred choral music from the Renaissance to Romantic era” and “polished, well-blended sound with skills of clear diction transmission”. (Choir and Organ, Korea)

After several performances with Baroque vocal Ensemble Bachsolisten Seoul from 2008, Collegium Vocale Seoul finally started to have their independent regular concerts. Along with their award at the Yeosu International Choir Competition and successful regular concerts, eventually CVS became one of the sacred choral music specialists, and an outstanding ensemble in Korea.

April 2014, Frieder Bernius estimated their potentiality after his choral seminar in Seoul, “As far as a choir has self-motivated joy and musical curiosity toward music, they will definitely grow more and more. And I am sure that this choir will continue to develop since they reacted immediately by my gesture and finger tips, not to mention their great passion for singing. ”

Between 2014 and 2015, especially, they performed Johannes-Passion BWV 245 of J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah and Mass in B minor BWV 232 of J.S. Bach successfully at the Seoul Arts Center with Bachsolisten Seoul. Then, they did one of series accompanied performance of J.S. Bach’s cantatas working with legendary Baroque oboist, Alfredo Bernardini.

Collegium Vocale Seoul has performed a wide range of choral repertoire from Renaissance to contemporary and they have been getting attention and recognition more and more in and outside country since they awarded the 2nd place prize at Yeosu International Choral Competition in 2013 and also 2nd place with three gold medals at the 32nd Takarazuka International Chamber Choir Competition in 2016.

Recently this ensemble’s first regular album on Sony classical International label, ‘Motet’ is scheduled for release in 2017 June as they were invited for touring concerts in five main cities in Germany such as Berlin, Leipzig to mark 500th year of protestant reformation in July. CVS is now on the verge of a new leap forward through their continuous work of recordings.

Under the direction of conductor, Sun-Ah Kim, they will continuously go on their path to researching and learning performance practices, different musical forms and styles of choral music, not only for just better and successful performance, but also for spreading out messages from music.
