The Domkantorei St. Pölten was founded in 1992 by Domkapellmeister Otto Kargl. It is an exquisite special ensemble with about 20 members and deals mainly with music up to 1800 and contemporary choral literature.
In addition to the liturgical service at the Kathedralkirche in St. Pölten, the ensemble is a regular guest at the Carinthischen Sommer, Brucknerhaus Linz, Festival Musica Sacra, Trigonale Kärnten and Festspielhaus St. Pölten.
The repertoire includes the a cappella literature of the 16th century, as well as the church music of the Italian and German early Baroque. With the Ensemble Private Musicke, the Domkantorei performs works such as Musicalische Exequien by Heinrich Schütz, Membra Jesu nostri by Dietrich Buxtehude; with the Piccolo Concerto Wien Masses and Requiem by Johann Kaspar Kerll and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. Together with the Cappella Nova Graz, Ensemble Les Cornets Noirs, Solamente Naturali Bratislava and L'Orfeo Barockorchester (Director: Michi Gaigg), the Domkentorei performs since the late 1990's the great choral-orchestral works that have been written, including Vespro della Beata Vergine by Claudio Monteverdi, J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and Mass in B minor (BWV 232), as well as George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Solomon and Joshua. The Classical repertoire is represented by Requiem and Mass in C minor by W.A. Mozart and Die Schöpfung by Joseph Haydn.
Other highlights include premieres by contemporary composers such as Christoph Czech, Michael Radulescu and Christian Muthspiel as well as radio and CD recordings in co-operation with the ORF. Recently, the double-choir motets of J.S. Bach, Mass in E minor by Anton Bruckner and the oratorio Joshua by G.F. Handel were published in the ORF-Edition. |
