Steve De Veirman (Choral Conductor)

Born: January 15, 1975 - Gent, Belgium

The Belgian choral conductor, Steve De Veirman, began his musical education in 1982 at the Muziekacademie Emiel Hullebroeck te Gentbrugge. He then followed higher music studies at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven. He combined instrumental training in piano, cello, Baroque flutes and singing with theoretical and pedagogical skills. To become proficient in the choir direction, he took lessons with Florian Heyerick, Rudy Tas, Johan Van Bouwelen and Erik Van Nevel. He further specialized with conductor and composer Kurt Bikkembergs. His choir and singing experience was also enriched by singing along with projects from various professional choirs and ensembles such as Ex Tempore, Collegium Brugense, Capella di Voce, Goeyvaerts Con sort, Musa Horti and Psallentes.

Steve De Veirman conducted the children's choir Papageno and the St.-Camilluskoor and spent three years at the musical helm of the Arenberg Kamerorkest in Leuven and the Gentse Schola Cantorum in in Gent. For five years he also directed the Volwassenenkoor Vokamando. In addition, he has also been the chief conductor of the renowned Cantabile-Gent choir since September 2011 and directed them to their last note in April 2017. Today he is still the conductor of the Jeugdorkest Forza Muzica, Kamerkoor Furiant, Jongerenkoor Furiakanti, Dameskoor Furiosa and Jeugdkoor Furiale.

His preference for J.S. Bach and his passion for authentic performance led to the founding of the Bachkoorgent in early 2017. With this talented choral group, Steve De Veirman focuses on the repertoire of the grandmaster and his contemporaries.

For 29 years Steve De Veirman has been directing his groups through 20 productions each year, with highlights such as John John Rutter's Requiem, Magnificat and Gloria, a concert cycle with Carl Orff's Carmina Burana with 400 performers, atmospheric passion concerts with choral work and poetry and various classical and romantic symphonic orchestra repertoire. Also the six performances of the musical 'Fame' with the Jeugdmuziekschool in Lochristi, the 5 performances of The King & I together with theater group TROS from Overijse and the atmospheric live version of Amadeus with Theater de WaanZin in de Minard in Gent were tasteful examples of his versatile creativity. The 3 compelling performances of the Broadway musical "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein in the Ntgent and the rendition of the passionate Magnificat by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach were the pearls that he directed in 2012.

2018 Women's choir Furiosa achieves 6th place in the international choir competition "CantaRode" in Kerkrade

With the various choirs and orchestras, Steve De Veirman knows how to carefully mix unique programs by contemporary composers with the classical repertoire. Again and again his focus is on theatrical and poetic interpretations in which text and emotionality prevail.

Since 2003, Steve De Veirman has been chairman and artistic director of the vzw Arte Musicale, an association in Gent that wants to support, encourage and guide young musicians by organizing concerts and artistic projects. He currently lives in Wondelgem.
