Shiyu Wang (Piano)

Born: September 16, ____ - Shanghai, China

The Chinese pianist, Shiyu Wang (Chinese: 交互方式), studied Piano Performance at Eastman School of Music (2011-2012). She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business; Music; Art History from University of Rochester (2012-2016); her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University (2016-2018), where she studied with Alexander Shtarkman. She has received full scholarship from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, and in September 2018 began her doctor of music program in piano under the tutelage of Professor Arnaldo Cohen.

Shiyu Wang has given solo recitals and performances at Carnegie Weill Hall, Eastman School of Music, Peabody Institute, Texas State University, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Fudan University, Shenzhen Arts School and Ningbo Concert Hall. She won first prize at the University of Rochester Concerto Competition; second prizes at the eMuse International Online Music Competition, American Protégé Competition, and Texas State International Piano Festival Competition. She was also prize-winner at the 5th Germany Beethoven Piano Competition and Shande Cup Piano Competition in Shanghai. She has performed in master-classes taught by Leon Fleisher, Fou Ts'ong, Dan Zhaoyi, John Perry, Tang Zhe, Roy Howat, and Joseph Rackers and studied with Enrico Elisi and Vincent Lenti at Eastman.

Shiyu Wang’s interest goes beyond piano performance. She holds double-major degree in music and business and certificate of a one-year program in Renaissance art history and French language from University of Rochester. She published a music theory article on Frédéric Chopin's E Minor Prelude in Music Space magazine in 2013. While studying in Rochester, she actively organized chamber music ensembles and participated in and arranged for charity concerts as Chamber Singers Piano Accompanist (September 2015-May 2016). In 2015, University of Rochester awarded her Ward Woodbury Prize for a student demonstrating outstanding leadership and achievement in music. She has worked as Piano Accompanist at The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University (Peabody Preparatory) (September 2016-May 2018); and Associate Instructor of Piano at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (since August 2018). In August 2020, she published Inside the Kaleidoscope: Short Essays on Music and Arts, which includes 11 academic essays on classical music and arts written during her undergraduate years at University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music (2012-2016). She currently lives in Baltimore, Maryland.
