Nicholas Ward (Conductor)

Born: 1952 - Manchester, England

The English conductor, Nicholas Ward, is the son of parents who met when they became members of the Hallé Orchestra. At the age of 12 he formed his own string quartet which remained together for 5 years until he entered the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Having studied with Yossi Zivoni in Manchester and André Gertler in Brussels, he moved to London in 1977 where he joined the Melos Ensemble and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1984 Nicholas Ward became co-leader of the City of London Sinfonia and leader of the Northern Chamber Orchestra, Manchester to which he was subsequently appointed Musical Director. In this form the orchestra has won high regard for its work both in the concert hall and the broadcasting studio.
