Anna Zander (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Sweden

The Swedish mezzo-soprano, Anna Zander Sand, started her musical education by studying jazz at Kulturama in Stockholm. After that she began to focus more on classical singing and studied for Arne Lundmark at Dalarö Folk High School for two years. Anna Zander then qualified as a singing teacher at the College of Music in Piteå, and after that she made her special studies in baroque singing for Susanne Rydén at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She has participated in several courses and master-classes, for example for Olle Persson, Torsten Föllinger, Nigel North and Emma Kirkby.

Anna Zander ended her Baroque studies in 2002 and the same year she became a member of the Swedish Radio choir. Ever since she has also worked as a soloist in great demand both in Sweden and in Europe. In the summer 2004 Anna won the first prize in a soloist competition in Early Music. The competition was held in Brunnenthal, Austria, and it became a great break through for her engagements in Europe. She works on a regular basis in Holland, Germany and Italy, mostly with concert and church music by J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, W.A. Mozart, but she has also done opera. For example The Magic Flute by W.A. Mozart (Third boy), Dido and Aeneas by H. Purcell (Dido), Il ritorno d'Ulisse (Fortuna, Melanto and Anfinomo) by C. Monteverdi and the church opera Stones about and also with music composed by Hildegaard of Bingen (Hildegaard). She has worked together with conductors such as Ton Koopman, Reinhard Goebel. Alexander Weimann, Stefan Parkman, Arnold Östman, Tönu Kaljuste, Etienne Siebens and Philippe Pierlot.

Anna Zander also works on a regular basis in different chamber music constellations. For example she has for several years worked with the lutenist Anders Ericson with whom she has performed a great deal of French Air de cours. During 2007 she worked a lot with the cembalist Mayumi Kamata. They put together a program with music composed by the Swedish composer Joseph Martin Kraus which they performed in Stockholm with great success.

Anna Zander is since 2006 a member of the ensemble Harmony of Voices, lead by Fredrik Malmberg.
