Otto Feix (Composer)

Born: October 14, 1890 - Friedland, Bohemia
Died: July 26, 1980 - Lahr, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The German composer, choral conductor, conductor, pianist, and singing teacher, Otto Feix, was the son of the composer Reinhold Feix. He attended Bürgerschule (public school) and Lehrerbildungsanstalt (teacher training college) in Liberec, where he worked from 1910-1930 as a choir master of the Lehrergesangvereins “Sucher“. He studied music in Vienna, Liberec and Dresden and completed his studies 1921-1922, with the state examination for theory , piano, choir, organ, counterpoint and violin.

Otto Feix worked from 1920 to 1930 as choirmaster of the Israelitischen Tempelchorvereins in Reichenberg, then as a teacher (professor) in secondary schools in Mies (1930-1935), Chomutov (1935-1938) and Reichenberg (1938-1945), where he also worked as a music critic and was active and choirmaster. After the expulsion, he worked in the Upper Palatinate (Mittenau) and since 1948 as a teacher in the teaching profession in Kaufbeuren in the Allgäu. From 1949 to 1953 he was music critic of Adalbert-Stifter-Vereins.

Otto Feix composed Lieder, Psalms, piano pieces, symphonic poems, Singspiele and music for the stage. In 1935 he received an award from the Archbishop's Ordinariate of Prague in recognition of his church music. Other awards include the Landschaftspreis and the Gustav-Leutelt-Kette (1967), the Musikpreis der Sudetendeutschen Landsmannschaft (1969) and the Liebig-Gedenkmünze des Reichenberger Heimatkreises (1969).
