Bach in Arts - Bach Portrait

B-15

Type:

Bach Lithograph

Title:

Lithograph by F.G. Schlick

Description:

First published by Hartung, then by “Verlag G. Schlick in Leipzig”, printer's mark “L. Zöllner impr.”. Schlick used as his model the Haussmann painting of 1746 (B-01), reversing the position of the body and arms and remodeling the hand. The signature on the canon-sheet includes the preposition “per”, which was also to be found on the original at the time (cf. B-01). First evidence of its existence comes from Robert Schumann, who wrote in Vol. 13 (Autumn 1840) of "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik": “This picture [Haussmann, 1746] has now been most faithfully lithographed by Mr. Schlick, a painter of Leipzig; it is a quite large and imposing sheet and far better than all the earlier portraits of Bach.” Hilgenfeldt (1850) also expressly states that it derives “from the picture in the Thomasschule”, which renders superfluous the theory of Smend (I) that the Haussmann replica of 1748 (B-02) was its model, which is also not very convincing from the physiognomical point of view.

Measures:

32.8 x 25.5 cm
Dated “1840”, only on the first printing.
Second edition 1857.
Also reduced in a picture montage with the Thomaskirche, Thomasschule, Pleissenburg, and Mendelssohn's Bach Memorial (1843).
