The Bach Cantatas Website celebrates its 13th anniversary

Aryeh Oron wrote (January 5, 2014):
The Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) was launched in its current form and address on December 30, 2000.

The BCW is located at: http://www.bach-cantatas.com
Description: The Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) is a comprehensive site covering all aspects of J.S. Bach's cantatas and his other vocal works and many of his instrumental works. The BCW contains for most works: detailed discographies, discussions, texts and translations, scores, commentaries, references, music examples... Performers of Bach’s works: their biographies, Bach discographies... Poets & composers associated with Bach: their biographies, Bach connection... Other resources: the Lutheran church year, chorale texts & melodies, books and movies on Bach, concerts, Bach festivals, guide to Bach tour... The BCW is an international collective project.

Some statistics: by the end of 2013, the BCW contains over 29,000 pages, 99,000 photos, 3,800 music files, and 3,000 PDF files.
The BCW is definitely the most popular site dedicated to J.S. Bach and his music and amongst the most popular sites dedicated to Classical Music in general.
The BCW has each day about 12-14,000 visits, from about 16-17,000 users, who see about 50,000-60,000 pages.
The BCW is rated very high in Google and other search engines, and there are over 430,000 links from other websites to the BCW (including, for example, over 7,000 links from Wikipedia and over 1,600 from YouTube)

There have been many improvements & additions to the BCW last year. See:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/New/Newsletter-2013.htm

As the creator of the BCW, not to me to testify for the value it has to the users. I know that it is extensively used by the academic community, by performers and by classical music fans around the world. The number of visits and the feedback I am getting continuously encourage me to continue, expanding, updating and improving the BCW. Many of the feedback messages from last year can be read at the page:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/About-2013.htm

I would like to use this opportunity to thank the numerous contributors to the discussions in the Bach Mailing Lists and some other lists, whose messages are compiled into the pages of the BCW. Their names are mentioned accordingly above each quoted message. I would also like to thank the many Bach lovers around the world who have sent me material to be included in the BCW, such as articles, translation of cantata texts, recording details, biographies, photos, music examples, links to other sites, etc. Their names are mentioned accordingly in the relevant pages.

I continue to look forward to receiving your comments (corrections, suggestions, improvements, etc.) about the BCW. The instructions how to send me comments, appear in the following page:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/How.htm

I wish you all another Great and Happy Bach Year!

Cantata BWV 51 - Updated Discography

Aryeh Oron wrote (January 13, 2014):
The discography pages of Cantata BWV 51 “Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!” for solo soprano, trumpet, string & continuo on the BCW has been revised and updated. That includes:
- Adding many details, cover photos, etc to existing recordings.
- 37 (!) new recording, most of them from YouTube, making it a total of 138 complete (or near complete) recordings.
- Over 120 listening/watching options to recordings directly from the discography pages, just below the recording details.
- Adding over 50 bio pages of “new” performers of this cantata
- Adding over 20 performer discography pages.

Since in many cases the data presented in YouTube is only partial, I had to do a deep search over the web to complete the missing details. Also, finding all the segments of a specific recording on YouTube is not easy. However, you have now all the info of each recording presented in one place together with options to watching/listening to many of them..

As usual with all the discographies on the BCW, all the issues of the same recording are presented together. The discography pages are inter-linked. You can start, for example, at the last decade page (2010-2019) and go backward to pages of previous decades:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/BWV51-Rec9.htm

I believe this is the most comprehensive discography of this popular cantata. If you are aware of a recording of BWV 51 I have missed or want to correct/add details of a recording already presented on the BCW, please do not hesitate to inform me.

I would be happy to get your input regarding this cantata, for example:
- If you are a listener: your opinion of the relative merits of the recordings available on the page above an/or other recordings at your disposal.
- If you have performed this cantata as a singer, player or conductor: your perception from preparing the cantata for performance and performing it.

NB: Currently BWV 51 is the most recorded of Bach church cantatas. However a few week ahead we shall discuss Cantata BWV 82 which can be sung by all 4 solo voices. I am afraid to think about the amount of work involving in updating the discography of that cantata “Ich habe genug“.

Cantata BWV 56 - Revised & Updated Discography

Aryeh Oron wrote (March 12, 2014):
The discography pages of Cantata BWV 56 “Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen” for solo bass, soprano, 2 oboes, strings, bassoon & continuo on the BCW has been revised and updated. That includes:
- Adding many details, cover photos, etc to existing recordings. This time I have also added the names of members of the vocal & instrumental ensembles (if known)
- 7 new recordings, making it a total of 71 complete (or near complete) recordings.
- Many listening/watching options to recordings directly from the discography pages, just below the recording details.
- Adding many bio pages of “new” performers of this cantata
- Adding/updating relevant performer discography pages.

As usual with all the discographies on the BCW, all the issues of the same recording are presented together. Because the number of different recordings became too big for a single page, I had to split it into several pages, a page per a decade. The discography pages are inter-linked. You can start, for example, at the last decade page (2010-2019) and go backward to pages of previous decades: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/BWV56-Rec8.htm

I believe this is the most comprehensive discography of this famous cantata. If you are aware of a recording of BWV 56 missing from these pages, or want to correct/add details of a recording already presented on BCW, please do not hesitate to inform me.

BCW: Over 10,000 Musician Bios!

Aryeh Oron wrote (April 3, 2014):
The BCW contains short biographies of musicians, organised in two sections.

Performers of J.S. Bach's works: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/index.htm
This section contains short biographies of every performer who has taken part in a recording of Bach's vocal works: mainly singers, conductors, chorus masters, choral and instrumental groups, as well as performers of Bach's solo keyboard and lute works. You can find in this section bios of many other instrumentalists, but at this stage the collection of their bios is far from being comprehensive.
The info for each bio is includes:
- Birth - date & place, death - date & place (if applicable)
- Body of the bio, including studies, prizes, main steps of the career, repertoire, important recordings, etc.
- Source/s of information and contributor/s
- Photos
- List of the recordings of Bach works in which the performer has taken part, arranged by conductor’s name (linked to the conductor’s discography page on the BCW), and BWV number
- If the performer has recorded under his/her name, there are links to his/her discography pages on the BCW
- Links to other sites.

Poets & Composers associated with J.S. Bach: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Lib/index.htm
This section contains short biographies of:
- Hymn-Writers, whose Chorale Texts were used in Bach's Vocal Works
- Librettists, whose texts were used in Bach's Vocal Works
- Composers of Chorale Melodies used in Bach's Vocal Works
- Composers, who used in their compositions Chorale Melodies used in Bach's vocal works
- Composers/Arrangers, who transcribed Bach's works for piano and for orchestra
- Musicians, belonging to the Bach Family
- Thomaskantors
- Composers, whose works were performed by J.S. Bach
- Composers, whose works were attributed to J.S. Bach
The info is presented in a similar way to the section of performer bios, but instead of a list of recordings, there is a description of the Bach Connection and a list of relevant works. In many cases there are links to other pages on the BCW associated with the musician, such as his/her arrangements/transcriptions of J.S. Bach’s works.

Naturally, there is some overlap between the two collections, since a players, for example, can also be a composer/arranger. In that case, the musician has only one bio on the BCW, but his name appears in the index pages of both sections.

The combined number of musician bios in both collections has just crossed the number 10,000. I believe this is one of the biggest collections of its kind on the web.

If you would like to contribute a biography of a musician associated with J.S. Bach, to complete a missing bio, and/or to expand/correct existing bio, please send it to me in accordance with the guidelines at: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/IndexBio-Exp.htm

Thanks,

Bach's Pupils

Aryeh Oron wrote (July 3, 2014):
J.S. Bach is most probably the most influential composer in the Western world music and beyond. His influence upon composers and composition began with the musicians who surrounded him. He selected and instructed musicians for orchestras and choirs in Weimar and Leipzig. His work as Thomaskantor included teaching instrumental and vocal lessons to the church musicians and later to the musicians of the court orchestra. J.S. Bach was also a teacher of his own children, four of whom would become important composers (Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian), and of his second wife, Anna Magdalena.

J.S. Bach was an influential teacher and certainly a very good one, since under his wings excellent composers in their own right have emerged. Of the Mühlhausen, Weimar and Köthen periods should be mentioned Johann Martin Schubart, Bach's successor in Weimar, was also one of his first pupils, as was Johann Kaspar Vogler. Also Johann Tobias Krebs, Johann Gottfried Ziegler, Johann Schneider, and Bernhard Bach, the son of J.S. Bach's eldest brother. It may be partly accidental that we do not know of a greater number of Bach's pupils from these periods. An interesting case is Bernhard Christian Kayser who followed his teacher from Köthen to Leipzig.

Still, it is certain that it was not until he was in Leipzig that J.S. Bach was busiest as a teacher. He trained there not only pupils at the Thomaschule (Thomaners), but also young men who have come to Leipzig to study with him (private instruction, gaining experience mainly in playing various instruments, but a few also have good adult voices). Among his Leipzig pupils must be mentioned Heinrich Nicolaus Gerber, Johann Ludwig Krebs, son of the above-mentioned musician, Johann Friedrich Agricola, Gottfried August Homilius, Johann Philipp Kirnberger, Christoph Transchel, Johann Theophilus Goldberg, Johann Christoph Altnikol and Johann Christian Kittel. One of his pupils, Johann Friedrich Doles, became later Thomaskantor himself and a leading composer of Protestant church music.

With great assistance from Thomas Braatz I have compiled a list of all known pupils of J.S. Bach from all periods of his activity as a teacher, including Mühlhausen, Weimar and Köthen, and of course, Leipzig. The list contains the names of pupils and students with whom J.S. Bach had musical contact during his Leipzig tenure with special emphasis upon the Thomaner and University of Leipzig students, but with the inclusion as well of some private music students who do not fall into either category.

The list of Bach's pupils presented is presented on the BCW at: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Other/Pupil-List.htm

The list is divided into two parts: musicians (85) and non-musicians (61).
For all Bach's pupils who became professional musicians I have created bio pages, linked from their names in the list.

Although 146 seems quite impressive, I believe that the actual number of pupils at the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's 27-year tenure years as Thomaskantor (1723-1750) is even bigger. And indeed, I have just discovered that in 2012 and 2013, staff at the Leipzig Bach Archive, headed by Dr. Peter Wollny, carried out systematic research into the lives and careers of the 325 Thomaner who had attended the boarding part of the choir school during Bach’s period. One in every four Bach Thomaner worked in later life as a church musician or schoolteacher. Thanks to this detailed research work in East German archives, numerous documents have been found which throw light on the life and teaching principles of the choir school. I hope to get the info from them and complete the list.

BCW: Videos of Bach places

Aryeh Oron wrote (October 31, 2014):
Peter Bach Jr. contributed to the BCW thirteen Bach videos about thirteen Bach locations. Nine videos are about the cities and places Bach lived in his life: Arnstadt, Dornheim, Eisenach, Köthen, Leipzig, Lüneburg, Mühlhausen, Ohrdruf, Weimar. Four additional videos present Bach cities and Bach places, which are related to the Bach family of musicians and only indirectly related to J.S. Bach. Wechmar is so considerable for the Bach Genealogy, that it is a must, to present it here; Gotha as well plays a role in the early Bach Genealogy, and Andisleben is the exception to the rule: that is exciting for the American Bachs of the family of musicians. And Erfurt? Erfurt is the Bach City, of all Bach cities.

Te videos come with narrated text (in both English and German), music (of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries) and information, with a length of 3-4, one is 6 minutes. You can do a mini Bach tour sitting in your chair, viewing them as appetizers for a real Bach tour, or evoking reminiscences of past visits to these places.

All the videos are presented in a dedicated page on the BCW: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Tour/Video-Place.htm
as well as in the relevant place pages in the section of Guide to Bach Tour on the BCW: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Tour/index.htm
where you can find a lot of information about every place associated with Bach: Places J.S. Bach lived in, places Bach visited, Bach family places, 50 in total. Each place page/s contain: Description and history of the place and its Bach connection, Relevant events in life history of J.S. Bach, Performance dates of J.S. Bach’s vocal works, Features of interest, Information & links, Photos, Maps, and more.

I believe this is the most comprehensive discography of this chorale cantata. If you are aware of a recording of BWV 116 missing from these pages, or want to correct/add details of a recording already presented on the BCW, please do not hesitate to inform me.

BCW: New Utility - Moving between movements of Bach' vocal works

Aryeh Oron wrote (December 18, 2014):
The BCW contains a page for each movement of Bach's vocal works. The page includes: BWV Number, Mvt. No, Title, Soloists, Choir and Insrumentation; in many cases also: Text, CT and its author, CM and its author, CM Score, and the relevant part of the BGA Score.
These pagers serve, among other things, as the data-base for the Search Works/Movements utility:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/INS-Search.htm
The movement pages are also linked from the main pages of Bach Cantatas & Other Vocal Works on the BCW.

I received recently a request from Åse Lunnan from Radio Norway:
"I am a music librarian in the Norwegian Broadcasting Company and I use your website several times a week. It is extremely useful for cataloging Bach cantatas in our record library. I check the instrumentations for each and every aria, recitative etc. There is one thing I would love to see, and that is a “next movement”-button from movement to movement in a cantata or oratorio/passion. Then we wouldn’t have to click back to the cantata’s /oratorio’s main page every single time we want to check the next movement. This adds a lot of extra clicking, especially in the oratorios/passions. I need to check every movement. "

Yesterday I finished adding inter-links to ALL the movement pages of Bach's vocal works, allowing the user moving back and forth between the movements:
Cantatas BWV 1-215
Masses BWV 232-236
Magnificats BWV 243-243a
Passions BWV 244-245
Oratorios BWV 248/1-6, 249

Åse Lunnan wrote in response:
"That is truly impressing and extremely helpful. I noticed yesterday when cataloging BWV 232 that I could press “next movement” all through the mass, and it saved me a lot of time! Time that you’ve had to spend instead, scripting... but now I’ll be able to save a lot of time each and every time I work with Bach vocal works here in our library, and I am sure there are a lot of other people who’ll appreciate this too.
Thank you so much for doing this!! And thanks again for a great resource, your site makes my work a lot easier."

I hope you will find the new utility useful for your needs as well.

Anthony Kozar wrote (December 31, 2014):
[To Aryeh Oron] Thanks very much, Aryeh!!

This is a very useful addition. I found myself wishing for these links back when I was retagging the vocal works in my iTunes library.

Thanks!
