Epistle: Isaiah 60: 1-6 The Gentiles shall come to thy light

[1] Arise, shine out; for your light comes, and the glory of the Lord dawns upon you.

[2] For, look, dark night covers the earth, and darkness covers the peoples : but the Lord arises upon you , and his glory appears over you.

[3] And the Gentiles will walk in your light, and kings in the brightness that dawns upon you.

[4] Lift up your eyes and look around: all these gathered together come to you: your sons will come from far, and your daughters shall be brought up at your side.

[5] Then you will see your delight and burst out in joy ,and your heart will befilled with wonder and overflowing; because the abundance of the sea is turned over to you , the power of the Gentiles comes to you

[6] The multitude of camels will cover you, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; they will all come from Sheba: they will bring gold and incense; and they will proclaim the praises of the Lord.

Gospel: Matthew 2: 1-12 The Wise Men seek Christ

[1] When Jesus was born at Bethlehem in the land of the Jews, look, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem and they said:

[2] Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him.

[3] When King Herod heard this, he was alarmed and with him all of Jerusalem.

[4] And he called together all the chief priests and scribes of the people and enquired of them where Christ was to be born.

[5] And they said to him : In Bethlehem in the land of the Jews. For thus it stands written by the prophet :

[6] And you Bethlehem in the land of the Jews are in no way the least among the princes of Judah; for from you will come the leader, who will be a Lord over my people Israel.

[7] Then Herod sent for the wise men privately and found out carefully from them when the star had appeared.

[8] and sent them on to Bethlehem and said : Go and enquire carefully about the child; and when you have found him, then come back and tell me, so that I also may come and worship him.

[9] When they had heard the king, they set out. And see, the star, that they had seen in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over above where the child was.

[10] When they saw the star, they were greatly delighted

[11] and went into the house and found the child with Maria, his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him and opened their treasures and gave to him presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh

[12] And God ordered them in a dream that they should not return to Herod. And they went another way back to their country.

The German text is that of Luther’s translation published in 1545; the English is a literal version intended for those who may need some help in following the German.
