Cantata BWV 49
Ich geh’ und suche mit Verlangen
Provenance

Thomas Braatz wrote (November 1, 2001):
BWV 49 - Provenance:

Both the autograph score and original set of parts still exist today, both key sources located in the Berlin State Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Preußischer Kulturbesitz.) All evidence points to a first performance on November 3, 1726 with the actual composition most likely having occurred shortly before that date. Bach's handwriting and musical notation in the score demonstrates that he was writing the music down in great haste. Despite this fact, the 1st mvt. reveals few errors, but this can be explained easily as he was transcribing from an existing copy of a lost viola concerto on which this mvt. was based. The remaining mvts. of this cantata contain more corrections than usual.

Regarding the Viola Concerto on which mvts. in BWV 169 and 49 are based, Wilfried Fischer presented his research on the reconstruction of this concerto in 1996. It appears that the Harpsichord Concerto BWV 1053 is a later transcription of the Viola Concerto, and it (BWV 1053) was not the source for Mvt. 1 of this cantata (49). The reconstruction of this lost Viola Concerto was published in 1996. Does anyone know of a recent recording of this work?
