Katalin Gémes (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: November 24, 1961 - Budapest, Hungary

The Hungarian mezzo-soprano, Katalin Gémes, began her music studies at Bartók Béla Secondary School of Music (1980 to 1983). She, and then continued vocal and opera studies with Edit Fábry and Margit László at Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music from 1983 to 1988. She graduated witb a diplomas as opera singer.

Katalin Gémes has been a mezzo soprano singer with the Hungarian State Opera House since 1988. In 1987-1989, she made several recordings with Capella Savaria conducted by Nicholas McGegan. In 1989, she sang the leading role in István Láng’s Bekerítve, mono-opera drama, staged for Hungarian Television and directed György Molnár. In 1991, she won 2nd prize at the Rossini's Singing Competition in Schwetzingen. She has performed on many of the world opera stages, including Italy, France, Israel, the USA, Japan.

Her major roles are: Mercedes in Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Hänsel in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Dorabellain in W.A. Mozart’s Così fan tutte, 2. Dame in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zabuerflöte, Cherubino in W.A. Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Singer in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Suzuki in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Rosina in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Cinderella in Rossini’s Cinderella, Orlovsky in J. Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, Octavian in R. Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier), Samuka in Vajda’s Widow Karnyó, Flora Bervoix in Verdi’s La Traviata, Magdeléna in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Magdalena in Wagner’s The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Apród in Wagner’s Parsifal, Woglinde in Wagner’s Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung.
