Coro de la Universidad de Sevilla (Choir)

Born: 1961 - Sevilla, Spain

Coro de la Universidad de Sevilla (Choir of the University of Seville), projected towards the great symphonic-choral repertoire, has interpreted in recent years the great oratorios of the history of music: from Verdi's Requiem and Johannes Brahms' German Requiem to George Frideric Handel's Messiah and Israel in Egypt; J.S. Bach's Magnificat in D major BWV 243, Matthäus-Passion BWV 244, Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248, Johannes-Passion BWV 245 and Mass in B minor BWV 232; W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass, Mass in C minor and Requiem; L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, and C. Orff's Carmina Burana, among other works. The Choir has also staged the operas Dido and Aeneas by H. Purcell, G.F. Handel's Theodora (first performance in Spain) and Acis and Galatea accompanied by the Orquesta Sinfónica Hispalense and various orchestras from Superior Conservatories. All these works and performances, plus various national and international trips, performances for television, etc., have been carried out since February 1997 when José Carlos Carmona was appointed Director.

But the Coro de la Universidad de Sevilla in its more than fifty years of life, has carried out numerous musical activities, from international premieres to the recording of several albums. Throughout these years its directors have been: Luis Izquierdo (who for 46 years has conducted the traditional Miserere de Eslava in Seville), Francisco García Nieto (who became Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid) , Fernando España (current Director of the Coral San Felipe Neri de Sevilla), Vicente Sanchís (former Director of the Banda Municipal de Huelva), José Manuel Delgado (technical director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla), Juan Luís Pérez (Professor of the Conservatorio Superior de Sevilla) and Pedro Caballero (Professor of the Conservatorio Profesional de Sevilla).

The Choir currently depends on the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Relations of the Universidad de Sevilla and is made up of around 60 permanent members, of whom 17 are scholarship holders.
