Angelika Wied (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: 1981 - Göppingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The German mezzo-soprano, Angelika Wied-Thöne, received her first violin lessons at the age of 8 and played in numerous regional orchestras during the following 12 years. From 1999 to 2001, she received singing lessons from Professor Adalbert Kraus (Musikhochschule München). After an apprenticeship as a media designer, she spent a guest study year in singing at the Musikhochschule Würzburg with Professor Klesie Kelly-Moog. Her further career took her to the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne in 2005, where she was initially taught by Professor Christoph Prégardien in the Artistic Education diploma course. Since November 2008, she studied in the singing class of Professor Claudia Kunz-Eisenlohr (Aachen). In the summer of 2010, she completed her studies as a concert and opera singer and has since worked as a freelance singer.

In addition to her busy activities as a concert singer, Angelika Wied played numerous roles on the opera stage: in 2007, she played with the Irmelin-Sloman Musiktheater the role of Hänsel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel in several cities in Germany. In March-April 2008, she received a study assignment from the Theater Aachen for the role of Orfeo in Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice. At the Theater Aachen she took over in 2009 the role of Ernesto in the opera Il mondo della luna by J. Haydn, and in 2010 she was on stage as Orsola in Il campiello by Wolf-Ferrari at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.

In 2012, Angelika Wied performed concert engagements in Beirut, Lebanon. There she sang at the Sursock Palace with the pianist Vahan Mardirossian (conductor of the Cannes Orchestra). Also in 2012, she appeared as part of an Ives project under the direction of Sebastian Gottschick as a soloist at the Philharmonie Köln.

In 2014 and 2015, Angelika Wied initiated a classical concert series at Schloss Bedburg (Erft), which supported the Deutschen Kinderhospizverein e.V. (German Children's Hospice Association) as a charity event. Since 2009 she is a permanent member of the Chorus Musicus Köln under the direction of Christoph Spering. In 2015-2016 she participated with the Chorus Musicus Köln in 4-CD recordings of all Martin Luther by J.S. Bach, which were released in 2017 and awarded the Echo Klassik 2017.

In 2017, Angelika Wied participated in the Theater Basel in the modern opera Oresteia by I. Xenakis, under the musical direction of Franck Ollu and directed by Calixto Bieito. Furthermore, she was involved in the ballet production Peer Gynt (staging by Johan Inger) and will star in Die Blume von Hawaii (Director: Frank Hilbrich, Choreography: Kinsun Chan, Musical Director: Jürg Henneberger) until January 2018 on the stage of Theater Basel.
