Christian Weiss, Sr. (Librettist)

Born: 1671
Died: 1737

Christian Weiss, Sr. was Pastor of the Church of St. Thomas in Leipzig from 1714 to 1737 and member of the Collegium Anthologicum (a learned society formed from the three higher faculties). His son, Christian Weiss, Jr. (1703-1743), was also among the clergy of St. Thomas' during J.S. Bach's Cantorate.

Wustmann and Neumann in Johann Sebastian Bach. Sämtliche Kantatentexte. Unter Mitbenutzung von Rudolf Wustmanns Ausgabe der Bachschen Kantatentexte herausgegeben von Werner Neumann (Leipzig, 1956), suggest Christian Weiss, Sr. as the author of the cantata texts listed below. Others, such as Charles Sanford Terry and W. Murray Young, suggest additional cantatas.
