The English artistic director, singer and choral conductor, Tom Herring, obtained his Bachelor of Arts First Class Degree from Oxford University (2013-2016), where he was a Choral Scholar at Merton College, Oxford. He is an aspiring singer and choral conductor having been a Quirister of Winchester College (during which time he reached the final of BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year), and later a Music Scholar at the College, where he was a member of the chapel choir and close harmony group Cantores Episcopi. He studied singing with Carys Lane in Oxford and Alexander Ashworth at the Royal Academy of Music. During term-time in Oxford, he sang at Merton College under the direction of Ben Nicholas and Peter Phillips as well as several other ensembles including Schola Cantorum of Oxford (of which he is a former chairman), Ensemble 45, and New Chamber Opera. In December 2013, he founded Sansara - a chamber choir made up of some of the country’s best young singers - in which he both sings and conducts.
Tom Herring has given a number of recitals in Oxford, including a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise, he has participated in masterclasses with Ann Murray and Susan Youens (Oxford Lieder Festival 2014), and is a frequent soloist in choral concerts (Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion BWV 244), recordings (The Choir of Merton College Oxford, The Henry Ley Singers) and services. He is the bass soloist on the recently released recording of Oliver Tarney's Magnificat (Convivium Records) and performed in the London premiere of the work at the Cadogan Hall in March 2016.
Since graduating from Oxford in 2016, Tom Herring has worked for Oxford Lieder (September-October 2016), Intermusica (January-February 2017), the Association of British Orchestras (February-April 2017) and Sulivan Sweetland (April-December 2017). He is the Producer of the Holy Week Festival (St John's Smith Square/Tenebrae; since January 2018) and an alumnus of the Nederlands Kamerkoor's NXT scheme. He has performed with ensembles such as Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short), The Tallis Scholars (Director: Peter Phillips) and Vox Luminis (Director: Lionel Meunier). Outside music, he is a keen photographer, traveller, verified dog person and wannabe yogi. |
