The Cori di Modena Musica Sacra were born from the qualifying experience of the service in the Modena cathedral, from 1992 to 2022.
In particular, the children's choir of Pueri Cantores and the youth choir of Juvenes Cantores were founded in 1999 by Maestro Daniele Bononcini. The model that Daniele Bononcini has always been inspired by is that of all the main European cathedrals, visited several times over the years, with the aim of reproducing the same international model in the Modena cathedral, which already in ancient times boasted an extremely efficient school structure. In fact, the musical education of children and young people dates back to the Middle Ages, when music was considered a fundamental discipline on a par with arithmetic, geometry and astronomy. Already at the beginning of the 12th century, Aimone, the Magister Scholarum of the Cathedral, had the task of overseeing the education of children in the art of liturgical singing, even though the documents preserved in the Cathedral archives demonstrated the existence of the school even before the 12th century. Strengthened by this past, the Pueri Cantores and the Juvenes Cantores – choirs made up of children and young people from elementary school to university – have, in over 20 years of activity, welcomed more than 300 choristers, many of whom have become professional musicians. They have been the protagonists of several recordings and have performed in concert some of the most significant sacred works: Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Antonio Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus, J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem; W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass. The Schola Polifonica is currently made up of over 60 choristers. It is directed by Maestro Daniele Bononcini, assisted by Maria Francesca Rossi (soprano section), Erica Rompianesi (alto section), Luca Colombini (tenor section) and Marco Bernabei (bass section). Seminars and special courses are held by high-profile teachers and musicians: (W. Marzilli, F. Prov-visionato…). The Schola Polifonica is the protagonist of several recordings (W.A. Mozart's Requiem, W.A. Mozart's Missa Brevis KV 258, Antonio Vivaldi's Magnificat and Credo, Perosi's La Resurrezione di Cristo…), and of a rich concert season. The repertoire ranges from the Renaissance polyphony of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and T.L. da Victoria to the present day, passing through all eras. Among the choirs of Modena Musica Sacra, there is also the Schola Gregoriana, formed by 25 singers and not involved in this production, whose existence contributes to keeping alive the most ancient and significant expression of European cultural roots. |
