Stefanie True (Soprano)

Born: Canada

The Canadian-born soprano, Stefanie True, studied voice with Catherine Robbin at York University (Toronto), where she completed her BFA in 2003. She then went on to study at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Netherlands) with Barbara Pearson, Diane Forlano, Jill Feldman, and Michael Chance, where she completed her Masters in Early Music in 2009. In 2010, she won second prize at the John Kerr Award Competition in Kent, UK; and in 2011, she placed first at the London Handel Singing Competition (Adair Prize).

Stefanie True has enjoyed performing throughout Europe and North America, and is a singer equally at ease on both Opera and Concert stages. Recent Opera highlights include the role of Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Fabio Bonizzoni (Tage Alter Musik Regensburg) as well as Oriana in George Frideric Handel’s Amadigi di Gaula with Andrew Parrott and Sigrid T’Hooft (Göttingen Händel Festspiele). She also collaborated with Vox Luminis and Opera2day in the role of Proserpine in Charpentier’s Orphée aux enfers. In 2012, she appeared in Gluck’s Orpheo ed Euridice as Euridice, at the Paleis Soestdijk with De Utrechtse Spelen, directed by Jos Thie. Other past opera highlights include the roles of Cephise in Campra’s L’Europe Gallante with William Christie (Ambronay Festival), Poppea in G.F. Handel’s Agrippina (Opera2day), and Serpina in Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona (Collegium Musicum Den Haag).

Stefanie True’s recent concert engagements have included performances with La Risonanza, Vox Luminis, Les Muffatti, Collegium Marianum, London Handel Orchestra, Nederlands Kamerkoor, Freiburger Bachchor, De Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht, Musica ad Rhenum, Holland Baroque Society, and performances of the Johannes Brahms' Requiem with De Nederlandse Bachvereniging. She recently had the privilege of performing with Frans Brüggen and the Orchestra of the 18th Century the role of Phani in a concert of excerpts from Rameau’s Les Indes Gallantes.

As a recitalist, Stefanie True has enjoyed numerous concerts with colleagues such as harpsichordist Patrick Ayrton (Musiques à Saint-Martin), pianist Bobby Mitchell (Den Haag), and fortepianists Bart van Oort, and Petra Somlai, (Netherlands). She also has toured around the Netherlands in the Seizoen Oude Muziek with the Luscinia Trio (2011) and Quartet (2014).

Stefanie True has appeared on many recordings including Lully’s Ballets & Recits Italiens with La Risonanza (Glossa), and on Centaur Records with Capella Savaria and Mary Terey-Smith (Arne Cantatas and Overtures, and Great Britain Triumphant!). A new disc with Centaur of Rauzzini’s Piramo e Tisbe is awaiting release. Her other numerous recordings appear on the Brilliant Classics label and include the roles of Aci in Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, Maddalena in La Resurrezione, Fillide in Aminta e Fillide, and solo recordings G.F. Handel: Complete Cantatas, all under the direction of Marco Vitale with Contrasto Armonico.
