Ms. Carolyn Sampson

Mitsuo Fukuda wrote (October 24, 2004):
I would like to introduce the following CD of BWV 210 and BWV 211.
http://www.bis.se/index.php?op=album&aID=BIS-CD-1411

In this recording Ms. Carolyn Sampson is featured with BCJ.

When she performed these two cantatas last year in Japan, I was so impressed. Her voice was(is) very charming in addition she was (is) beautiful and smart.

Also, she will be featured in BCJ's performance of BWV 126, BWV 127, BWV 1, BWV 35, BWV 51 and BWV 1083 next year.

Suzuki secular cantatas

Thomas Shepherd wrote (October 29, 2004):
I see that a volume of secular cantatas BWV 210, BWV 211 has been released by BIS: http://www.bis.se/index.php?op=album&aID=BIS-CD-1411.
Has anyone heard them yet and are they worth buying? - the blurb from BIS states the they are "A stunning introduction to the world of Bach's cantatas and to the incomparable Bach Collegium Japan directed by Masaaki Suzuki."

Peter Bright wrote (October 29, 2004):
[To Thomas Shepherd] I have this disc (courtesy of fellow list member Piotr) and really enjoy it. To be quite honest, the cantatas themselves are not among my favourites - but the musicianship is exemplary, and I do enjoy Carolyn Sampson's voice. I was quite surprised that the disc didn't form part of the official complete cantatas edition Suzuki is currently pursuing, but I presume this is being restricted to the sacred works. In any case, this looks like it will be part of a sub-series of similar high quality to the BCJ volumes most of us know and love. One of the few problems I had with (particularly) the earlier volumes of the series, was a perceived limitation among some of the soprano voices. With Sampson, there is no such concern - her voice is like a bell - clean, clear and expressive. I definitely recommend this recording.

John Pike wrote (October 29, 2004):
[To Thomas Shepherd] I haven't heard any of Suzuki's recordings, unfortunately, but the latest disc of secular cantatas is disc of the month in this month's BBC music magazine...a rave review.

Secular Cantatas - Bach Collegium Japan

Philippe Lefou wrote (November 2, 2004):
I was delighted to spot in this month's new releases the first in Bach Collegium Japan's series of Bach Secular Cantatas with:

O holder Tag, erwünschte Zeit (Wedding Cantata) BWV 210

Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht (Coffee Cantata) BWV 211

The soprano is Carolyn Sampson, who has been blowing my socks off since the Handel Ode for St Cecilia's Day (and is also on the Hyperion Monteverdi series).

A copy is on its way but does anybody have any thoughts yet?

(And, yes, the Suzuki AAM concert in Cambridge was most warming.)

Peter Bright wrote (November 2, 2004):
[To Philippe Lefou] I have this CD and thoroughly recommend it. It's wonderful hearing Carolyn Sampson singing with the Bach Collegium Japan - beautifully clear and expressive singing and playing all round.

I also enjoyed the recent concert By Suzuki and BCJ in Cambridge - the harpsichord concerto was brilliant. Suzuki is a very fine harpsichord player indeed! The chosen cantatas are not among my favourites but it would be very hard not to be won over by such warm, responsive playing.

A good month or two for Suzuki - his volume 25 of the Bach sacred cantatas series received 5 stars (both for performance and sound quality) in Gramophone, and I believe that the secular cantatas disc with Sampson was the recording of the month in BBC Music Magazine...
