[To Riccardo Nughes] That's good news. What's their planned price range? When I got it on CD in '89 or '90 it was in the MCA Classics Double Decker series...less than $12 USD for the two discs. Definitely worth that and more. Scherchen's SJP, Mozart Requiem, and some of the Beethoven symphonies were available in that series as well.

[To Bradley Lehman] Will they do his 1954 Messiah?

Scherchen's Bach

Kevin Parent wrote (May 23, 2005):
My Scherchen Mass and St. John Passion are still the old MCA Double Deccas (the cd trays are long gone though). I know they've been reissued since and have heard that the more recent transfer of the Mass is different but isn't a great transfer itself. Can anyone suggest whether it's worth replacing? Is there a good transfer somewhere else, or should I just keep mine and wait? And how about the SJP? Listening to it today while doing some back-to-back comparisons with other recordings of the work, it does sound quite flat.

Thanks,

Scherchen first Mass (1950): available in CD?

Mathias Girel wrote (November 19, 2005):
Does anyone know where I could find this recording of BWV232 (I am looking for the 1950 1st recording not the 1959 one)?
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Performers/Scherchen-Rec2.htm

Is it, or was it, really available in CD? I'd be very grateful for any help, on or off-line

Thanks again to Aryeh for his tremendous work of cataloguing!

Aryeh Oron wrote (November 20, 2005):
[To Mathis Girel] Thanks for your kind words. Yes, this recording is available on CD.
I bought it couple of years ago from HMV Japan and it is still listed in their catalogue.
See: http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail.asp?sku=237937
The Japanese transfer is excellent and the rendition is mesmerising. I wrote about it in a review of the early recordings of the MBM.

[To Aryeh Oron] Thanks a lot Aryeh!

You definitely have a Bach museum at home! I had missed this reference since the website is in japanese and the page was not available directly in english.

I have read tantalizing reviews by a critique, here (André Tuboeuf), comparing the two versions, the 1950 and the later one, with a marked preference for the first. And your own review makes it even more attractive.

Thanks again!

Kevin Parent wrote (November 22, 2005):
I ordered Scherchen's first from amazon.co.jp about a month ago and am still waiting, so I might give hmv.co.jp a try. Ironically, I have an order of Masses already waiting with them, this time being held up by Coates' version.

Since we're talking about Masses and Japan, and since I've seen no metnion of this here or on the cantatas list, HMV-Japan also has a DVD of the Richter video performance of the Mass up for pre-order. You'll need the right region (Japan is 2, like Europe, but I don't know how this particular disc will be encoded) and, perhaps more importantly, you'll need either a PAL-equiped TV or a DVD player that'll convert.

[To Kevin Parent] Thanks a lot for this information!

My own cd should be here by Nov 24, it seems to be rather short but let's see!,,,

I already have much from Richter (Passions, cantatas...) but it's good to know that there are DVDs available. I hope the transfer is good!
