First Part

1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Oboe I e Violino I all' unisono, Oboe II e Violino II all' unisono, Fagotto, Continuo

Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht,
Do not be scandalised,my soul,
Dass das allerhöchste Licht,
that the most exalted light,
Gottes Glanz und Ebenbild,
God's splendour and image
Sich in Knechtsgestalt verhüllt,
Disguises himself in the form of a servant,
Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht!
Do not be scandalised, my soul!

2

Recitative [Bass]

Continuo

Die Knechtsgestalt, die Not, der Mangel
The form of a servant, distress and want
Trifft Christi Glieder nicht allein,
affect not only the members of Christ,
Es will ihr Haupt selbst arm und elend sein.
He himself who is the head is willing to be poor and wretched.
Und ist nicht Reichtum, ist nicht Überfluss
And is not wealth, is not excess
Des Satans Angel,
Satan's hook,
So man mit Sorgfalt meiden muss?
That must be carefully avoided?
Wird dir im Gegenteil
If on the contrary for you
Die Last zu viel zu tragen,
the burden is too much to bear,
Wenn Armut dich beschwert,
If poverty weighs you down,
Wenn Hunger dich verzehrt,
If hunger devours you
Und willst sogleich verzagen,
And you're on the verge of despairing,
So denkst du nicht an Jesum, an dein Heil.
Then you do not think of Jesus, of your saviour.
Hast du wie jenes Volk nicht bald zu essen,
If you don't have something to eat, like these people,
So seufzest du: Ach Herr, wie lange willst du mein vergessen?
Then you sigh: Ah Lord, how long will you forget me?

3

Aria [Bass]

Continuo

Bist du, der mir helfen soll,
If you are the one who shall help me,
Eilst du nicht, mir beizustehen?
Do you not hurry to stand by my side?
Mein Gemüt ist zweifelsvoll,
My mind is filled with doubt,
Du verwirfst vielleicht mein Flehen;
Perhaps you scorn my plea;
Doch, o Seele, zweifle nicht,
Yet, O soul, do not doubt,
Laß Vernunft dich nicht bestricken.
Do not let reason entrap you.
Deinen Helfer, Jakobs Licht,
Your helper, Jacobs light,
Kannst du in der Schrift erblicken.
You can see in the scriptures.

4

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Ach, dass ein Christ so sehr
Alas that a Christian so much
Vor seinen Körper sorgt!
Should care for his body!
Was ist er mehr?
What is it more than this?
Ein Bau von Erden,
A building of earth,
Der wieder muss zur Erde werden,
That must become earth again
Ein Kleid, so nur geborgt.
A garment, that is only borrowed
Er könnte ja das beste Teil erwählen,
He could choose indeed the best part
So seine Hoffnung nie betrügt:
then his hope would never be deceived:
Das Heil der Seelen,
The salvation of souls
So in Jesu liegt.
Depends on Jesus.
O selig! wer ihn in der Schrift erblickt,
Ô Blessed is he who sees in the Scriptures
Wie er durch seine Lehren
How through his teaching
Auf alle, die ihn hören,
For all who hear him
Ein geistlich Manna schickt!
He bestows a spiritual manner!
Drum, wenn der Kummer gleich das Herze nagt und frisst,
Therefore when misery eats away and devours your heart,
So schmeckt und sehet doch, wie freundlich Jesus ist.
Then taste and see how friendly Jesus is.

5

Aria [Tenor]

Oboe, Continuo

Mein Heiland lässt sich merken
My saviour lets himself be known
In seinen Gnadenwerken.
In his works of mercy.
Da er sich kräftig weist,
Since he reveals himself powerfully
Den schwachen Geist zu lehren,
To teach the weak spirits
Den matten Leib zu nähren,
To feed the feeble body
Dies sättigt Leib und Geist.
This satisfies body and soul.

6

Choral e[S, A, T, B]

Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Ob sichs anließ, als wollt er nicht,
Even though it appears that he is unwilling,
Laß dich es nicht erschrecken;
Do not let yourself be frightened
Denn wo er ist am besten mit,
When he is most with you
Da will ers nicht entdecken.
He does not reveal himself.
Sein Wort lass dir gewisser sein,
Allow his word to be more certain that you
Und ob dein Herz spräch lauter Nein,
And even if your heart says simply no
So lass dir doch nicht grauen.
Do not let yourself be terrified.

Second Part

7

Recitative [Bass]

Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Es ist die Welt die große Wüstenei;
The world is a vast wilderness;
Der Himmel wird zu Erz, die Erde wird zu Eisen,
The heavens will become brass, the Earth will become iron
Wenn Christen durch den Glauben weisen,
When Christians show through their faith
Dass Christi Wort ihr größter Reichtum sei;
that the word of Christ is the greatest riches;
Der Nahrungssegen scheint
The blessing of being fed seems
Von ihnen fast zu fliehen,
almost to flee away from them,
Ein steter Mangel wird beweint,
They weep for a constant want
Damit sie nur der Welt sich desto mehr entziehen;
Which for this reason causes them to withdraw from the world all the more.
Da findet erst des Heilands Wort,
Then at last the saviour's word,
Der höchste Schatz,
The greatest treasure,
In ihren Herzen Platz:
Find a place in the hearts
Ja, jammert ihn des Volkes dort,
Indeed,if he has compassion on the people there
So muss auch hier sein Herze brechen
Then his heart must break here also
Und über sie den Segen sprechen.
And speak a blessing over them.

8

Aria [Soprano]

Violino I/II all' unisono, Continuo

Die Armen will der Herr umarmen
The Lord will embrace the poor
Mit Gnaden hier und dort;
With his mercy here and there;
Er schenket ihnen aus Erbarmen
Out of his compassion he sends to them
Den höchsten Schatz, das Lebenswort.
His greatest treasure, the word of life.

9

Recitative [Alto]

Continuo

Nun mag die Welt mit ihrer Lust vergehen;
Now the world with its pleasures may pass away;
Bricht gleich der Mangel ein,
Even if dearth breaks out,
Doch kann die Seele freudig sein.
Yet the soul can be joyful.
Wird durch dies Jammertal der Gang
If the way through this valued sorrows becomes
Zu schwer, zu lang,
Too burdensome, too long,
In Jesu Wort liegt Heil und Segen.
In the word of Jesus salvation and blessing.
Es ist ihres Fußes Leuchte und ein Licht auf ihren Wegen.
It is a light for their feet and a light on their way.
Wer gläubig durch die Wüste reist,
Whoever travels with faith through the desert
Wird durch dies Wort getränkt, gespeist;
Will be given drink and food through this work;
Der Heiland öffnet selbst, nach diesem Worte,
The saviour himself, according to his word, opens
Ihm einst des Paradieses Pforte,
The Gates of Paradise one day for him
Und nach vollbrachtem Lauf
And after the course of their life has been completed
Setzt er den Gläubigen die Krone auf.
He sets a crown on the head of those who believe.

10

Aria (Duet) [Soprano, Alto]

Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Laß, Seele, kein Leiden
My soul, let no sorrow
Von Jesu dich scheiden,
Separate you from Jesus
Sei, Seele, getreu!
Be faithful, my soul!
Dir bleibet die Krone
The Crown weight you
Aus Gnaden zu Lohne,
Is your reward through grace
Wenn du von Banden des Leibes nun frei.
When you will be free from the body's prison.

11

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Oboe I/II, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Die Hoffnung wart' der rechten Zeit,
Hope awaits the right time
Was Gottes Wort zusaget.
Which is promised by the word of God
Wenn das geschehen soll zur Freud,
When to our joy at shall happen
Setzt Gott kein g'wisse Tage.
God ordained is n ordains.
Er weiß wohl, wenn's am besten ist,
He knows well what is for the best,
Und braucht an uns kein arge List,
And it uses no cunning on us,
Des solln wir ihm vertrauen.
Therefore we ought to believe him.
