1

Chorale and Aria [Soprano, Bass]

Oboe I/II, Taille, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Soprano:
Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid
Ah God, how many a heartache
Begegnet mir zu dieser Zeit!
I meet with at this time!
Der schmale Weg ist Trübsals voll,
The narrow way is full of affliction
Den ich zum Himmel wandern soll.
by which I must travel to heaven.

Bass:
Nur Geduld, Geduld, mein Herze,
Only patience, only patience,my heart,
Es ist eine böse Zeit!
This is an evil time!
Doch der Gang zur Seligkeit
But the way to blessedness
Führt zur Freude nach dem Schmerze.
leads to joy after sorrow.

2

Recitative [Bass]

Continuo

Verfolgt dich gleich die arge Welt,
If the evil world at once persecutes you,
So hast du dennoch Gott zum Freunde,
then you still have God as your friend,
Der wider deine Feinde
who against your enemy
Dir stets den Rücken hält.
always guards your back.
Und wenn der wütende Herodes
And when Herod in his rage
Das Urteil eines schmähen Todes
decrees the judgement of shameful death
Gleich über unsern Heiland fällt,
on our saviour
So kommt ein Engel in der Nacht
then there comes an angel in the night,
Der lässet Joseph träumen,
who causes Joseph to dream
Daß er dem Würger soll entfliehen
so that he may flee from the executioner
Und nach Ägypten ziehen.
and travel to Egypt.
Gott hat ein Wort, das dich vertrauend macht.
God has a word that makes you full of confidence.
Er spricht: Wenn Berg und Hügel niedersinken,
He speaks: though mountain and hill fall down,
Wenn dich die Flut des Wassers will ertrinken,
though the flood of water wants to drown you,
So will ich dich doch nicht verlassen noch versäumen.
it is not my will to abandon or forsake you.

3

Aria [Soprano]

Violino solo, Continuo

Ich bin vergnügt in meinem Leiden,
I am happy in my sufferings,
Denn Gott ist meine Zuversicht.
since God is my reassurance.
Ich habe sichern Brief und Siegel,
I have a sure letter and seal
Und dieses ist der feste Riegel,
and this is the strong bolt
Den bricht die Hölle selber nicht.
that hell itself does not break.

4

Recitative [Soprano]

Continuo

Kann es die Welt nicht lassen,
Even though the world does not cease
Mich zu verfolgen und zu hassen,
to persecute and hate me,
So weist mir Gottes Hand
yet God's hand shows to me
Ein andres Land.
another land,
Ach! könnt es heute noch geschehen,
Ah! if only it could happen today
Daß ich mein Eden möchte sehen!
that I might see my Eden!

5

Chorale and Aria [Soprano, Bass]

Oboe I/II, Taille, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo

Soprano:
Ich hab für mir ein schwere Reis
I have before me a difficult journey
Zu dir ins Himmels Paradeis,
to you in heaven's paradise,
Da ist mein rechtes Vaterland,
which is my true fatherland,
Daran du dein Blut hast gewandt.
for which you have shed your blood.

Bass:
Nur getrost, getrost, ihr Herzen,
Be comforted, be comforted, you hearts,
Hier ist Angst, dort Herrlichkeit!
Here is anxiety, there glory!
Und die Freude jener Zeit
and the joy of that time
Überwieget alle Schmerzen.
outweighs all sorrows.
