1

Chorus [S, A, T, B]

Violino I col Soprano, Violino II coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Continuo

Siehe zu, dass deine Gottesfurcht nicht Heuchelei sei,
See that your fear of God is not hypocrisy
und diene Gott nicht mit falschem Herzen! (Ecclesiasticus 1:28)
and do not serve god with a false heart!

2

Recitative [Tenor]

Continuo

Das heutge Christentum
Christianity today
Ist leider schlecht bestellt:
is in a bad way:
Die meisten Christen in der Welt
most Christians in the world
Sind laulichte Laodicäer
are lukewarm Laodiceans
Und aufgeblasne Pharisäer,
and puffed up Pharisees
Die sich von außen fromm bezeigen
who make an outward show of being pious
Und wie ein Schilf den Kopf zur Erde beugen,
and like a reed bow their heads to earth
Im Herzen aber steckt ein stolzer Eigenruhm;
but in their hearts stands fixed an arrogant self-glory;
Sie gehen zwar in Gottes Haus
they do indeed go to Godís house
Und tun daselbst die äußerlichen Pflichten,
and do there external duties,
Macht aber dies wohl einen Christen aus?
but does that really make them Christian?
Nein, Heuchler könnens auch verrichten.
No, hypocrites also can perform as much.

3

Aria [Tenor]

Oboe 1II e Violino I all' unisono, Violino II, Viola, Continuo

Falscher Heuchler Ebenbild
The appearance of false hypocrites
Können Sodomsäpfel heißen,
can be called Sodomís apples
Die mit Unflat angefüllt
that are filled with filth
Und von außen herrlich gleißen.
and from outside glisten splendidly.
Heuchler, die von außen schön,
Hypocrites, who are outwardly fine,
Können nicht vor Gott bestehn.
cannot stand before God.

4

Recitative [Bass]

Continuo

Wer so von innen wie von außen ist,
The person who is the same within as without
Der heißt ein wahrer Christ.
is called a true Christian.
So war der Zöllner in dem Tempel,
Such was the tax-collector in the temple
Der schlug in Demut an die Brust,
who struck his breast in humility,
Er legte sich nicht selbst ein heilig Wesen bei;
he did not assume he was a holy being;
Und diesen stelle dir,
and make this person,
O Mensch, zum rühmlichen Exempel
o mankind, a praiseworthy example for you
In deiner Buße für;
in your repentance.
Bist du kein Räuber, Ehebrecher,
Even if you are no thief or adulterer
Kein ungerechter Ehrenschwächer,
no unjust breaker of oaths,
Ach bilde dir doch ja nicht ein,
ah do not then imagine
Du seist deswegen engelrein!
that for this reason you are as pure as an angel!
Bekenne Gott in Demut deine Sünden,
Humbly acknowledge your sins to God,
So kannst du Gnad und Hilfe finden!
then you can find grace and help.

5

Aria [Soprano]

Oboe da caccia I/II, Continuo

Liebster Gott, erbarme dich,
Dearest God, be merciful.
Laß mir Trost und Gnad erscheinen!
Let your comfort and grace appear to me
Meine Sünden kränken mich
My sins sicken me
Als ein Eiter in Gebeinen,
like an abcess in my bones
Hilf mir, Jesu, Gottes Lamm,
Help me, Jesus, lamb of God,
Ich versink im tiefen Schlamm!
I am sinking in deep mire.

6

Chorale [S, A, T, B]

Oboe I/II e Violino I col Soprano, Violino II coll'Alto, Viola col Tenore, Continuo

Ich armer Mensch, ich armer Sünder
I, poor man, I, poor sinner,
Steh hier vor Gottes Angesicht.
stand here before Godís face.
Ach Gott, ach Gott, verfahr gelinder
Ah God, ah God, deal gently with me
Und geh nicht mit mir ins Gericht!
and do not bring me to judgement!
Erbarme dich, erbarme dich,
Be merciful, be merciful
Gott, mein Erbarmer, über mich!
my merciful God, to me!
