O fair day, longed for time,
Willkommen, frohe Stunden!
welcome, happy hours!
Ihr bringt ein Fest, das uns erfreut.
You bring a celebration, that delights us.
Weg, Schwermut, weg, weg, Traurigkeit!
Away, melancholy, away, away, sadness!
Der Himmel, welcher vor uns wachet,
Heaven, which watches over us,
Hat euch zu unsrer Lust gemachet:
has made you for our pleasure:
Drum laßt uns fröhlich sein!
So let us now be joyful!
Wir sind von Gott darzu verbunden,
We are enjoined by God to do this,
Uns mit den Frohen zu erfreun.

Denn eure angebornen Triebe
for your innate urge
Verleiten uns zur Eitelkeit,
leads us astray to vanity
Und dieses schickt sich nicht zur Zeit.

Ein frommes Ehepaar
A devout married couple
Will lieber zu dem Dankaltar
would rather to the altar of thanks
Mit dem Gemüte treten

Es ist vielmehr im Geist bemüht
