|
Nur jedem das Seine!
Muß Obrigkeit haben
Zoll, Steuern und Gaben,
man weigre sich nicht
der schuldigen Pflicht!
Doch bleibet das Herze dem Höchsten alleine. |
Unto to each his own!
If authorities must have
tolls, taxes and compensation,
one should not refuse
the indebted dues!
Yet the heart remains the Most High’s alone. |

|
Du bist, mein Gott, der Geber aller Gaben;
wir haben, was wir haben, allein von deiner Hand.
Du, du hast uns gegeben Geist, Seele, Leib und Leben
und Hab und Gut und Ehr und Stand!
Was sollen wir denn dir zur Dankbarkeit dafür erlegen,
da unser ganz Vermögen nur dein und gar nicht unser ist?
Doch ist noch eins, das dir, Gott,
wohlgefällt: das Herze soll allein,
Herr, deine Zinsemünze sein.
Ach! aber ach! ist das nicht schlechtes Geld?
Der Satan hat dein Bild daran verletzet,
die falsche Münz ist abgesetzet. |
You are, my God, the granter of all gifts;
we have what we have from your hand alone.
You, you have granted us spirit, soul, body and life
and possessions and goods and honor and position!
What shall we then repay you in gratitude for these,
for all our assets are yours and not at all ours?
Yet, there is still one thing, God,
which might please you: the heart alone,
Lord, shall be your interest cash.
But oh my! is that not fake money?
Satan has marred your image on it,
the wrong coin has been deposited. |

Laß mein Herz die Münze sein,
die ich dir, mein Jesu, steure!
Ist sie gleich nicht allzu rein,
ach, so komm doch und erneure,
Herr, den schönen Glanz bei ihr!
Komm, arbeite, schmelz und präge,
daß dein Ebenbild bei mir
ganz erneuert glänzen möge! |
Let my heart be the coin,
which I remit to you, my Jesus!
If it not be entirely clean,
oh, then do come and restore,
Lord, a beautiful polish over it!
Come, work it, forge and imprint it
so that your likeness on me
might glisten brand new! |

Ich wollte dir, o Gott, das Herze gerne geben;
der Will ist zwar bei mir,
doch Fleisch und Blut will immer widerstreben.
Dieweil die Welt das Herz gefangen hält,
so will sie sich den Raub nicht nehmen lassen;
jedoch ich muß sie haßen, wenn ich dich lieben soll.
So mache doch mein Herz mit deiner Gnade voll;
leer es ganz aus von Welt und allen Lüsten
und mache mich zu einem rechten Christen. |
I would, O God, gladly give you my heart;
in fact the desire is within me,
yet flesh and blood will always resist.
As long as the world holds the heart captive,
so will it allow nothing to be robbed of it;
therefore, I must loath it if I am to love you.
So, do make my heart full with your grace;
drain it completely of the world and all lusts
and make me into a proper Christian. |

Take me from myself and give me to you!

to fulfill your will;
give me yourself along with your goodness,
that my heart and my spirit
remain in you forever and ever,
take me from myself and give me to you! |

Führ auch mein Herz und Sinn
durch deinen Geist dahin,
daß ich mög alles meiden,
was mich und dich kann scheiden,
und ich an deinem Leibe
ein Gliedmaß ewig bleibe. |
Lead also my heart and mind
by your Spirit, there,
that I might evade anything
which could separate me from you,
and I eternally remain
a member of your body. |
