Hans Wijers (Baritone)

Born: The Netherlands

The Dutch baritone, Hans Wijers, studied at Elzendaal College Boxmeer. He initially studied Dutch language and literature at Nijmegen University, but soon turned to singing. After his first two years at the Arnhem Conservatoire with the great Dutch teacher Aafje Heynis, he moved to the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where he studied with Meinard Kraak (1984-1988), and graduated in 1988. In the following years, he studied with Margreet Honig in Amsterdam and was coached by various teachers such as Jard van Nes, Paul Hillier, Max van Egmond, Lynne Dawson and Diane Forlano.

Hans Wijers is an indepentern singer since June 1988. He sang the bass solos in all the great choral works by J.S. Bach as well in a number of cantatas. His repertoire stretches from Monteverdi (Maria Vespers), Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé (Requiem), to Dmitri Shostakovich (Symphony No. 14).

As an ensemble singer, Hans Wijers freelanced for many years with Collegium Vocale Gent and La Chapelle Royale under Philippe Herreweghe. He also sang for three seasons with Weser=Renaissance under Manfred Cordes. Currently, he occasionally sings with Camerata Trajectina and is a member of Ton Koopman’s Amsterdam Baroque Choir (since March 1992) and the Balthasar-Neumann-Chor under Thomas Hengelbrock (since March 1996) and Cappella Amsterdam (since October 2010). His greatest musical love, however, is the Egidius Kwartet, which he founded together with three friends in 1995, and which has meanwhile made numerous recordings and a variety of programmes.
