Henk Gunneman (Tenor)

Born: The Netherlands

The Dutch tenor, Henk Gunneman, studied singing and piano at the Conservatorium in Groningen (1980-1989). In his studies, where he received lessons from Grethe de Vink, he took singing and interpretation courses with Max van Egmond and Thom Bollen. After receiving his UM degree in 1989, he continued his education in England with the early music specialist Nigel Rogers, and after that period at the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in Aldeburgh, where he took lessons with Diana Forlano and participated in master-classes led by Anthony Rolfe-Johnson. After several years of having private lessons with Margreet Honig in Amsterdam and Ronald Klekamp in Haarlem, he perfected his singing with Matthijs Mesdag in Zaandam. Christoph Prégardien coached him with the interpretation of J.S. Bach's Evangelist parts.

Henk Gunneman has a wide repertoire and is much in demand as a soloist for oratorio concerts in his homeland - from early music to contemporary music and from time to time in opera performances. He has specialized in Baroque music with the accent on the great Passions and Cantatas by J.S. Bach, in which he primarily performs as Evangelist, but can also be frequently heared in the arias. He has also sung, among others, the oratorios Messiah, Judas Maccabaeus and Israel in Egypt by George Frideric Handel; Requiem and several Masses by W.A. Mozart; The Creation and Stabat Mater by J. Haydn, Oratorio de Noël by Camille Saint-Saëns and Saint Nicolas Cantata by Benjamin Britten and many other works of famous and lesser-known composers.

Henk Gunneman has worked with several conductors such as Erik van Nevel and Jos van Veldhoven and with orchestras such as Het Gelders Orkest, Il Concerto Barocco and Florilegium Musicum. He sings regularly with professional choirs and small ensembles. Since 1992 he is as an ensemble singer in the Amsterdam Baroque Choir, conducted by Ton Koopman, with which he gave concerts in several European countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Poland and Sweden, and made ​​tours to America and Japan. He also sings regularly with the Nederlands Kamerkoor in Amsterdam (since 1992), Cappella Amsterdam and Groot Omroepkoor (Netherlands Radio Choir) in Hilversum (1992-2011).

At the Nederlandse Opera Henk Gunneman performed as a soloist and ensemble (1996-2010) roles in Die Glückliche Hand by Arnold Schoenberg, Die Meistersinger by Richard Wagner and Die Soldaten by B.A. Zimmermann. Since 2001 he is a member of the ensemble "Men's Voices" which performs in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, among others, music from the repertoire of retro - 1920's to 1950's arranged especially with for this ensemble. Since 2010 he also works as director with chamber choirs and a chamber orchestra. As a teacher he gives private singing lessons.
