Stephen Carter (Counter-tenor)

Born: England

The English counter-tenor and music tacxher, Stephen Carter, started singing as a boy chorister at Durham Cathedral Choir, where he became Head Chorister, and subsequently as a Choral Scholar at Christ Church Oxford. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours from the University of Oxford (Oxon)

Since graduating Stephen Carter has worked as a professional freelance counter-tenor, touring extensively with the foremost early music groups, notably The King's Consort (Director: Robert King), The Tallis Scholars (Director: Peter Phillips), Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh), The Sixteen (Director: Harry Christophers), Finzi Singer (Director: Paul Spicer), Amsterdam Baroque Choir (Director: Ton Koopman), Retrospect Ensemble (Director: Matthew Halls), The English Concert Choir (Director: Harry Bicket), Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short). He has also appeared as a soloist with Devon Baroque & the Exeter Chamber Choir conducted by Andrew Daldorph (George Frideric Handel's Messiah, 2005); Northern Pro Musica & Ripon Choral Society conducted by John Dunford (2001), etc.

Stephen Carter has been teaching singing at Aysgarth School since 2009. Previously he had been the singing tutor at Bradford University and had also taught privately. He is very keen to help the boys realise their potential as singers.

In his spare time Stephen Carter is a keen runner and his other passion is astronomy, to the extent of going back to school recently to take his GCSE (he got an A*!). He lives with his wife, a primary school teacher and his three children in West Yorkshire.
